Postby Bebop0083 » Mon Jul 07, 2003 2:21 pm

not sure if it should be in here but here it goes. what is the binary codes for video files. cause i have problems uploading mpegs and such on to the ftp. i dont think ASCII files are cutting it for my mpegs. they only work on my small files such as rm and wmv. but they dont like any thing thats over 23 MB. can some one tell me how i can change that? thanks.

Erm... what do you mean by binary codes? Are you using the vanilla ftp client that comes with most operating systems? If so, type 'BIN' before you start transferring ANY files that are not text. ASCII mode screws over files that aren't text-compliant files.

1. Use a graphical client to see if it changes things.
2. Make sure you're not running out of quota.
3. You still haven't explained the whole 'binary codes' thing.

ok ill try that. ill explain a little of what binary codes are a little later. basically what they are is that say if you want to load up html or some thing by ftp or some form of text format you would look under the binary codes for that setting. thats just an example. ill try to clearify it unless some one else does.

Um... as far as i know, there are no "binary codes". Your client just has 2 methods of downloading, ASCII and BINARY. You use the ascii mode for text files, and binary mode for everything else.

This shouldn't even be an issue. If you're using WS FTP, it has a little something that is pretty much universal among modern FTP clients called "automatic detect". Just select the file you want to upload on the left-hand side of the interface, and click the arrow button that points right. Presuming you're logged in to the server you're trying to access, it SHOULD automatically figure out that you're not sending an ASCII text file, and begin sending the file as binary.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no such things as 'binary codes' in the real world. There's no need: a binary is a binary is a binary is a series of 0s and 1s that doesn't necessarily correspond to a sequence of the 128 ASCII characters. The only reason that FTP is able to detect ASCII is that the highest-order bit of each byte is always a zero. Otherwise, it's just a bitstream, just pulses on the line.

Just TRY uploading your vid using automatic detect, or 'BIN' mode as suggested earlier, and tell us how that works out. It can't be any worse than where you're at right now.

Yes, I do use FTP, and no I don't know what it is, and yes, I most likely have used FTP much more than you have. If you give something an arbitrary name, don't expect others to be able to figure it out. I can only think of two things 'binary codes' could possibly be. One would be the command set (RETR, PASV, etc). The other could be the response set (those 3 digit number thingies). Those don't even make sense in the context of your question.

I'm starting to wonder if you're talking about MIME-types...

Erm.... if I get what you're saying... you mean File Extensions?
Like mpeg video -> .mpg or .mpeg
Jpeg images -> .jpg or .jpeg
AVI video -> .avi
Quicktime -> .mov
??
