Dont know if this will help you or not but I have VERY reliable good DSL service from Bellsouth. Runs me about $45 a month.

Call your local Telco and see what they offer. Likewise, check out your copy of the yellow pages for ISP's. If you can't get service from your telco (in my case Verizon), fuggetaboutit and get cable. It costs more, but the speeds can put dsl to shame (my uploads certainly do), although it's usually at the cost of stability (I get an across the board disconnect from IRC 2-3x/day).

Oh, and sometimes the telco will lie about availability. Make sure they give you an exact # of feet for your loop. If it's over 15,000 forget it, you'll be lucky to get sync and your speeds will rival dialup for shite factor. 10,000-15-000 should be ok, under 10,000 is safe.

Upload speeds? Capped at what, 192kbit at best? That's damn slow. My DS1 (~18kft to CO) gets 8 times that, and without a bit of downtime.

And, its all digital at that! Silly analog! Who want's it?! And I even get a special digital telephone network interface device, too!

My connection is 1.8Mbit down 500Kbit up. I've had a couple brief resyncs (enough to knock me off IRC while I'm asleep, not enough to keep me from functioning when I need to be active), but that's it. Even BT works fine until I get too close to the upload cap and it starts interfering with the downloads.

Cable so far is a better value than DSL. Though they don't have lower-tiered services. But I was at one time paying $80/mn for Verizon 1.5Mbit/384Kbps service. I pay $55/mn for 2.1Mbit/256Kbps service. I can live without the extra upload.

But it's just kinda amazing that broadband prices aren't dropping. The companies out there have monopolies and it's just annoying. You can get 56K for 7$, or you can get Cable for $55. Where's the inbetween?

I'm still with Verizon DSL and they cut the price just this month - used to be $50/month, now it's $35. I didn't have to ask or anything. They also announced increased speeds, but I haven't noticed any change yet. What I have - 128K up - could use some improvement.

Well, what would happen with my Verizon DSL was that it would loose synch. Sometimes the modem would go offline. Sometimes it wouldn't, but we couldn't ping the gateway. We couldn't do jack. This kept happening and sometimes it would happen for like hours at a time. I called two or three times and they kept saying it was my computer. It would do it on all of my computers. It was obviously a problem on their end and they did everything they could to prevent having someone come out and work on it.

:\

So I went "cancel" and got comcast. Better speed, better service @ a cheaper price. It was 45 @ first, now it's $55 since Comcast came in. Comcast was running a ad blitz telling us how they were going to improve the service 'cuz they were "the new neighbor in town". All they did was raise the price . Thanks you!
