I'm going to use a very fluid definition of punk here, since it means so many things to so many people.

From the sixties, more garage than punk, but the rawness is there, I'd recommend the Mops. 80s hard rock band Ultra Bide was amazing live. Ghost is possibly the best band on the planet, but they are very eclectic and can go from folk to punk to prog rock to psych in the same song, or have one song almost fit in any genre at any time. Overhang Party is great. While I'm not sure if they're punk or pop, Rural is great. I just agot a cd by (i think, most of the type is in katakana) GAGAGA SP, which I've been playing a lot. Also, while I haven't heard them yet, Mongul 800's name has been poping up quite a bit.

That's all that pops into my head at first,

I would consider Dir en Grey 6 ugly punk. Its the engrish that makes it great. Come on, dont tell me "Little miss girl, very fond of child" isnt the greatest line ever. I most likely spelt Dir en Grey wrong, so dont flame me for it.
im sorry, i retrect the last statment.

naw, you spelled it right.

I think six ugly is kind of a mixture of metal and punk. And yes, the Engrish rules!

All I listen to is Punk Rock, so I know what's good or bad. However, the only two JAPONESE bands I can tell you about are Camino and Duel Jewel, because I saw them live.

They are terrible, stay away from them.

If you want American Punk rock, I've got loads of it, some good canadian stuff too.

Two words.

"The Pillows".

They did the majority of the FLCL (Fooly Cooly if you must) soundtrack, and I love every song buy them that I've heard to date.

Yes!

I don't even like punk rock, but I have to say that the FLCL/Pillows match was perhaps the best in anime history.

Consequently, I've actually been able to enjoy their music even without the anime.

Just got a 7" in from Japan over the weekend by TAR23. The song name is the Filter and it just blew me away! Closer to math rock than punk, but it's raw enough to be classified as punk if'n you ask me. (looking at the package, it may be The Filter playing TAR23. It's so hard to tell (^_^;;)

The Pillows wouldn't be considered "Punk", they'd be arroung the Emo/Pop section.

Nonchaku is a wicked Japanese underground/hardcore/punk group though. Very terrible at that.
