uber n00b with uber n00bish question [DVD ripping]

Postby question » Sun Jun 15, 2003 5:17 pm

ok...i have an idea for my first amv. the problem is, all of my freinds use kazaa footage for there amvs, but i refuse to. i want to use the footage i have on dvd. dont ask me why, that just feels right. well i was looking through this site (which is awesome, props to the creators) and i found this guide: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... /step3.php

so it has a little about dvds, and it says if u have a dvd drive then itll be easy to capture. well is that like a dvd burning drive or just a drive that can play dvds, cuz i have the 2nd one. if it is 2nd, what do i have to do to rip it.

this is probably somewhere on the site, but i was looking and i couldnt find it. sry if some one has already explained this to some other n00b, but i raelly want to make an amv lol. thank you SO MUCH! this board looks awesome, and ill be sure to share my first amv with yall! :P

:| not to sound harsh but if you didn't understand that you shouldn't really be getting into amvs, because that's the meat of it |:
it's already basically explained as best as possible, that's why it's a guide :/
sorry :O :/ you gotta have the patience to learn it |:

don't worry, digital video is no easy subject. I got caught up in it for a good half a year before I could say I really understood anything.

Well earlier I gave someone advice on this and someone told me it was a waste of time, so I will give you a brief idea of where I started. Which well get you going, and then good resources for advanced editing and information and other peoples guides to see their methods.

I used SmartRipper to rip all the VOB files [DVD video files] to my harddrive. Once you have all the VOB files there are many ways you can work with them in serveral different ways. *Possibly* the easiest way to get started [for a newbie] would be to load these VOB's in "DVD2AVI" and select to "Save Project" which will create a *.D2V file that can be loaded into TMPEGEnc so you can export your clips to various MPEG formats. These clips can then be loaded into premiere. [This is the method that someone told me was a "complete waste of time" but since you are new to editing it, is probably easier than the methods suggested in their guide.] Unless you feel comfortable writing scripts for a frameserver program, that can be loaded into other editing programs.

This is the site that got me started and answered many of my DVD-ripping related questions.

http://www.vcdhelp.com

This is a good guide someone recommended to me with lots of information on various topics about AMV creation, including ripping DVD's.

**Just noticed it's listed above already** But...

This guide also has good general information for various topics.

Hope this helps you out some. I've been editing for a few years and am learning new things everyday, that's just the way it goes. You will start to get the hang of it...

The good part about those guides is you don't HAVE to understand them, just accept them. Look for key words like "LOAD", "OPEN" or "DOWNLOAD" and just do what they are telling you, accepting that the hamsters in your computer will get it right. If it doesn't work, print it out, read it again, and again, and again, then eat the paper to consume the knowledge into your soul. Eventually an AMV will come out the other end. Wether it's a GOOD amv has nothing to do with the ripping guides however...
