Former boy band members gone solo make me even sadder.
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

^^" there are so many songs out there that can make people really sad..

but hmm the one that comes to mind that useto make me cry and everything became an opening theme for a chinese show called "my date for a vampire season II"

other than that the song that.... I have a thing for the song Suteke dane by Rikku.. but meh that's all japanese.. hmm a song in english that I actually comprehend that's sad... hmm

there are a lot.. but meh they became really annoying after a while like "my heart will go on" by Celine Dion...

Mine's sorry about that by alkaline trio. The did it with a drunk chick, and he feels really bad about it. It may not sound sad, but it really is. It has a heart breaking delivery.

X-Japan: Forever Love (Last Live)-seriously, this is the most tragically beautiful piece of music I've ever had to chance to hear.

That or Ascent by Brian Eno.

I also must say Psychopomp by The Tea Party. Though, in my opinion, the live version they did for Psychopomp that was used for their music video is the best version. I really love that song.

My favourites are:
The Tea Party - Release, Psychopomp (Live Version), The Messenger
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
Dream Theater - Through Her Eyes
Slaughter - Prelude
Clint Mansell - Requiem for a Dream
Vertical Horizon - Miracle
Metallica - The Unforgiven, No Leaf Clover, Nothing Else Matters
Our Lady Peace - Thief
Live - Lightning Crashes, Run Away
Stone Sour - Bother
Fuel - Hemorrhage

I'll have to second "Fake Plastic Trees." :(

Also:
U2 - "Bad," particularly the version in the Rattle & Hum movie... (sniff)

REM - "Nightswimming" - which isn't exactly sad so much as nostalgic.
