Anyways, moving on...

well, sure, I'm not gonna argue with the above-mentioned influences. Just that, since most people went up with their favorites, I put up mine too. There's really more world-class guitarists out there than you can shake a stick at...

Well i'm sure there are,but most of them have never been Exposed to the mainstream media, and therefore have not gotten their fair shair of the fame. Oh and keaton, Angus Young is the GUITARIST for AC/DC my man. Thanks for trying to help okay?

Anything by John Petrucci.

Joe Satriani - Surfing with the alien (whole album)
System of a down - Soil (well ok it's not the hardest thing in the world, but i like how it sounds)
rush - La villa strangiato
and pretty much any hendrix or zapa song has good solos in it.

I had that Joe Satriani tape in college, but, -sigh- it got lost all those years ago. Great stuff on there. Hopefully I can find the CD next time I go on vacation. Or I guess I can check CDNOW. Thanks for reminding me what I need to add to my library.

They were already mentioned but deserve the credit...
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven... best... solo... ever...

Ya want Clapton?
Tears in Heaven
Change the World
Layla
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (oh so good)
Rush - Limelight
Pink Floyd - Dogs, Sheep, hell, the entire album of Animals has incredible guitar solos. Completely other-worldly.

What about Kirk Hammet? Did everyone just forget about Metallica or what? The greatest, in my opinion has to be Jump in the Fire. Listen to it all the way through, you'll see what I mean.

Is it me, or do a lot japanese fast rock music have these incredibly nice sounding solos? Sometimes it sounds as if they're just using it as a flourish instead of using it as the main idea

e.g.:
Saikano OST - track 17 - Chikyuu(Hoshi) no Hate
There was also another track on that OST, I think it was 10, that starts out slow, and then just kicks in with nice sounding solos

B'z - Love Phantom
Pretty rocking song in general. This has a lot of those 'flourish' sounding solos.

BTW, I've heard somewhere that Satriani is really big in Japan amongst guitarists and that's why there's so many soloists out there. Is this true?

Approximately 80% of the tracks Steve Vai has ever released.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze, Star Spangled Banner (how the hell did you not mention him before??? And these tracks???)
Frank Zappa - Muffin Man (a beloved great solo of mine), Peaches en Regalia (possibly the funnest instrumental of all time)
Brian May's work on Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and Night at the Opera - pick your own tracks.
Joe Pass - Virtuoso (Album, Jazz - hard to pick out single track)
John McLaughlin - Electric Dreams (Album, Jazz-fusion, again uniformly good)
Robert Fripp - Fracture (Possibly the most complex instrumental rock track of all time, chilling guitar work), 21st Century Schizoid Man (most legendary)
...

Discriminating tastes. King Crimson, while an unstable entity, was certainly accordable.

To tip my hat in, I'd suggest some of the jazz guitar greats, like Mr. John Scofield.
