What version of windows are you running?

Did you build the PC yourself or buy it from a company?

Do you have any of the CDs that came with the hardware/computer?

Man try to find a model number on it.

:/ Look in the device manager see if you have anything under unknown devices. If it has a ? mark or something.

If not that open the thing up and look at the cards for identifying markers. Like chips that have brand names or something.

Although that course of action doesnt always work. Take for example, my brothers video card. Its an nVidia vanta (his system is a few years old, hes only 13, jeez) but when we looked on it, all we found was a few chips that said "Hyundai". I thought "I aint never heard of a Hyundai video card before..."

If you are on the net, sometimes the codecs for certain audio/video files will download automatically. if not, you can just right-click them, check the properties and see what you need that way. Or just get one of those evil codec packs like Nemo (i have it, theres a few things i needed, but it tried to tazke over my programs, the evilness! )

I don't know what codecs have to do with his video and audio. I mean viewing divx @ 16colors with no sound is not a pleasant experience. -_-.

As long as you can get the video card out of there and look on it and see a FCC ID number(all electronics have them) you can goto the FCC's website and look up who owns the ID. From there you can find their website and drives MAYBE.

But most of the time the chips will have a name like Rage3D or nVidia, Creative on them or something :/. OR a model # like emu10k1.

PCI Communications Device is either a Modem or a network card.

IT looks like the site that kthulhu pointed out even has a auto-detect feature. Not sure how good it would work :/.

Also I couldn't bing a B3G, there was a 83C tho :/

been there and I have a solution that works 96% of the time

Postby post-it » Wed May 28, 2003 6:11 pm

Win98 is not very-good at detecting things; however, your in luck ^^

this is almost goof-proof, and it is not that hard to do:
. what ever card your looking at usually has one (1) LARGE chip ( IC ) on it.
1) there will be a Main Name
.... Trident, Yamaha, Crystal . . .

2) right below that will be a set of Letters and Numbers
.... TGUI9680-1, XG YMF724F-V, CX4237B-X03 . . .

Trident and Yamaha have their own web site for drivers.
. . Crystal is that 4% I was talking about ~_~ . . they are now Creative Lab's ( Sound Blaster )

to find-out which one you have, turn the power-off . . . pull the card . . look for the largest IC ( chip ) on that board . . write-down the letters and numbers . . . replace the card . . . start-up your computer again ^^ and search for them ^^

? is this an old-fashion way of doing things ?? . . YUP!

traxx

just my opinion ^^
