Lots and lots of extremely good listening in classics, though with one caution - usually, in this case it isn't the piece itself that is so important, but the performer.

THe ledgend was the first classical guitar solo i had heard, and man was it a good one. But yes, classical music make for great listening, exspecialy when your working out ... nothing like beethoven while your doing butterfly curls.

Crud, I forgot Liquid Tension Experiment. They do some incredible stuff!

I also forgot to put some Pink Floyd in here. I can't get the solos in Comfortably Numb out of my head.

Heh, you a fan of long songs too? Just because I love epics so much, I'll post my favorite long songs (that contain really nice guitar work  )...

Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons (~23 minutes)
Liquid Tension Experiment - When the Water Breaks (~17 minutes)
Symphony X - Divine Wings of Tragedy (~20 minutes)
Symphony X - The Odyssey (~24 minutes)
Power of Omens - Test of Wills (~20 minutes)

There's more, but those are my favorites. I'm always on the search for really long songs.

Well, I love epics, that's true. Generally, the length just indicates that there's musicians good enough to keep a statement going for that long. Or, alternatively, and even better for me - actually engage in lengthy improvisation. That's what really touches off a note with me. It's not that it's always that it really produces something great and legendary, but the result is usually very much alive in nature.
Calculated epics I like in a bit of a different way, but like them all the same.

Oh yea, and Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment have long been on my watchlist, but sadly other musical interests and lack of resources tend to keep me away... well, one day, one day...

Forgotten legends...

Al DiMeola, first few solo albums and with Chick Corea's Return To Forever.
e.g. "Flight Over Rio", "Race With Devil on Spanish Highway", "Dark Eye Tango"

Steve Hackett, ex-Genesis
e.g. "Firth of Fifth" or "Time Lapse at Milton Keynes"

Carlos Santana, maybe Steve Howe, are other possibilities for "legend" status.

Oh, not forgotten!

Santana, Howe, Hackett and DiMeola all get a nod from me. Generally though, I find Howe and Hackett's work was much better with their respective Legendary Bands than on their own. Same, from my point of view, is the case with Floyd's Gilmour.

Santana and Dimeola, on the other hand, I do find lots better on their own.

Another influential player not to be forgotten is Ritchie Blackmore. Did I mention him yet? Certianly, in the rock stream, one of the most influential figures ever.

No, haven't heard Night I think... I've heard a bit of his solo stuff which was, in some respect, bad, and some that's not so bad.
In general, Blackmore is just massively influential. You have whole generations of guys, from Brian May to Joe Satriani who definitely were directly influenced by his playing.
In terms of influential guitarists, the three top ones I'd have to name off would be Jimi, Blackmore, and John McLaughlin.

Anyways, moving on...

well, sure, I'm not gonna argue with the above-mentioned influences. Just that, since most people went up with their favorites, I put up mine too. There's really more world-class guitarists out there than you can shake a stick at...
