Resources for Video Editing

Utility Software

There are hundreds of utilities available at various places on the Internet. Some good starting points are:

http://www.doom9.net
http://www.digital-digest.com/
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/VIDEO_MULTIMEDIA/
http://linux-sound.org/one-page.html - (Linux only)

These lists are here at AnimeMusicVideos.org:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/quuguide/quu1a.html
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/software.html

Forums

All of the major manufacturers of NLE software maintain support forums. See the associated Web sites for Premiere, Sound Forge, etc.

These sites also have active forums:

Creative Cow has forums that cover many different software packages, notably Vegas and After Effects.
http://www.creativecow.com/

Digital Digest covers just about anything regarding digital video.
http://forum.digital-digest.com/

Audio Forums is for music editing and production and has forums that are dedicated to specific manufacturers of audio editing software.
http://www.audioforums.com/

Music and audio on the Macintosh:
http://www.macmusic.org/home/?lang=EN

Software Reviews

These are sites for DV video that post reviews of many editing software packages.
http://www.dv.com/
http://www.abcdv.com/

Reviews are also posted here at AnimeMusicVideos.org:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/help/software/

Some online retailers like Amazon will host reviews that are written by their customers.

Kmv pointed me to this list of free video editing software. It's on the doom9 forum. The original post is here, but I'll copy the list in case it disappears for some reason.
ABC VideoRoll
Dead product and no way to get a registration key so it dies quickly.

AIST Movie Explorer
Dead. Can't seem to find it.

AIST MovieXone
http://www.aistinc.com/products/moviexone.asp

Little documentation. Download is currently disabled (I have version 4.0 build 8327, the German site reports there is a 4.5 version) Supposed to be some free transitions but you have to register (broken). How do plug-ins work? Horrible purple color scheme though. Bleech! Wish it could be changed to brushed metal.

(ed. download is available; see the first entry in this topic)

Avid Free DV
http://www.avid.com/forms/info.asp?iTrackingID=7682

Avid will be releasing Free DV sometime in mid-2003 for both PC and Mac. Sign up for an email notification when it is available.

Axogon Composer 0.93.1
http://www.5star-shareware.com/Util...n-composer.html

This is the "before" version of MainConcept's MainVision program. There's also quite a following among the guys who do all those Lego movies.

CyberLink PowerDirector 1.1
review: http://www.consumerdvreviews.com/ed...tor/default.asp
CyberLink PowerProducer 1.0 VE (VCD Only)

For a limited time in April (?) 2003 CyberLink gave these away free on their website. Copies may be floating around the web. They're fairly large (12M and 22M) and required a registration number. The numbers were the same for everyone.

(ed. deleted keys)

DDClip Free

Free version won't work on Win2K with >2G available space in the install partition. Author won't update it. WTF?!?! That's about as useless as the free Pro Tools 5.01 that won't run on Win2K.

Digital Origin freeDV
http://www.dvchannel.com/ (free registration)

Dead product. 3 minute limit.

Heroine Warrior Cinelerra
http://www.heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3

Linux-only unless someone cares to get into the source and make a Windows version (boy, wouldn't THAT be nice, especially if they included full VST, DX, AviSynth, VirtualDub, Premiere, and After Effects plug-in support.)
(Is there a free way to run Linux in a window? That might be a solution.)

pure motion EditStudio
http://www.puremotion.com/editstudio/index.htm

Some of the British magazines have included a complete, older version on their CD. We don't get those here (I'm in North Carolina) and can't find a way to download. Does anyone have a good URL for this?

Windows Movie Maker 2
http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/moviemaker/

Appears to only be for Windows XP.

Zwei-Stein Video Editor
http://www.thugsatbay.com/zweistein/

I've sent email a number of times but never get a response. Nice program but without source or a plug-in architecture there's no way to integrate it with AviSynth/VirtualDub.

--

Basically, I'm looking for a free NLE that will (preferably) support the DebugMode PluginPac FrameServer (http://www.debugmode.com/pluginpac/frameserver.php)

The best options right now seem to be Axogon Composer, CyberLink PowerDirector 1.1 (if you can find it) and Zwei-Stein. Avid Free DV looks promising, too.

There's also a "shootout" between some of the leading PC NLE's:
http://www.dvline.com/cfwebstore/tour/about.htm

Really wish the authors of Zwei-Stein would release the source...

note that such lists are VARY hard to upkeep but helpfull nonetheless, a video capture program list would also be helpfull. Virtual Dub or TMPGenc, free and HIGHLY suggested linear editing/ 'codec manager' programs, are usefull in releiving the stress while, maybe, making a very beginner freindly cut-and-paste 'Linkin Ball Z' video .

For students you can look out for educational prices. I usually order my stuff through

http://www.creationengine.com

Heres a sample:

Adobe Digital Video Collection 8.0 WIN/MAC
(Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop & Illustrator)
AD81211 $469.00
(this gets you the full version of each of these programs, with the manual)

LightWave 3D 7.5 MAC/WIN Upgrade
(serial number required)
NT22513 $199.00

LightWave 3D 7.5 MAC/WIN USB
NT22413 $395.00
(The five pack of lightwave is 995.00, and it includes five usb dongles, so pool up five guys that want it and you're set)

Good thread, but can anyone help me with Ulead's VideoStudio?

What I need to know is... have you used it, and if so does it tend to crash every 10 seconds with a C++ library runtime exception?

If it is as buggy as it seems, are there any other STABLE sub $100 editors that work in the same fashion? Any that also allow panning/Zoom?

I'm running a PII 400mhz, but I find ONLY a recomendation for an 800mhz PIII or greater if your doing capturing (which I'm not). Never the less, I wonder if the BIG crashing problem is a matter of my PII being too slow.

I have 256mb memory BTW.

Taran, add Cinelerra to the audio editing list, seeing as how it was an audio editing program before it became Cinelerra :D
