Why not focus on P2P hosting?

Postby CArnesen » Wed Aug 07, 2002 12:36 pm

Here's a good question for most people here... Instead of worring about hosting on a dedicated server, why not focus on building a strong Peer-to-peer network with AMVs?

Example: I use WinMX and share all MP3s and Videos that I download, from both here and other places. People are always downloading from me, plus they are downloading other parts of the same file from other people. This leads to faster downloads and happier people! (because they can get their anime fix faster)

Why not start a standard here on a-m-v.org where we post an indirect link to http://www.winmx.com/ and in the Comments, put WinMX: Creator - Title [a-m-v.org].avi or whatever extention it is so that people know what to search for?

Running a dedicated FTP server can be really bandwidth intensive, but the more people that have dedicated internet connections that share the same files the faster the downloads are and more reliable. FTP servers aren't very reliable and you frequently have to "get lucky" to get connected, where WinMX has queueing available...

Just food for thought!

Dpeending on time of day, amount of available bandwidth, quality of the P2P server, whether or not a network likes your computer, and how many butterflies in Africa are flapping their wings, it's possible to get great results, to get poor results, or even to not be able to see a computer altogether over a given P2P client.

HTTP and FTP hosting is still the most reliable option.

there are still many people who cant afford broadband and some can only use internet from facilities (ie university & office) that sets very high security that blocks p2p, ftp, messenger & irc. that is why I still prefer to offer transfer via http and amvcd giveaway.

Until I can afford highspeed internet, I won't be doing p2p sharing.

But you don't need high speed internet access in order to download from other p2p users... I have people on 56k modems and (eek!) 28.8k modems downloading from me all the time. Of course I don't expect them to share any files!

Indeed... But whos willing to host videos made by us ppl who only have a >= 55.6K modem, and esp. if none of it ever been entered or screened at a con? I have more than 10, each is over 40MBs. I personally don't think most people would get to finish downloading even one of my videos because: 1. I don't stay online for longer than 3hrs a day and I don't go online everyday; And 2. I'm one of the minority who lives within GMT+8 so I don't expect the majority at the other side of the world would be able to find my videos unless I stay online after midnight or very early in the morning (which I usually don't.)

Only the very popular videos maybe exist and stays reliable in p2p. The rest will have to rely on 24/7 webhosting until it become popular.

pls excuse my horrible grandmar. It's 3am here, think I need to go to sleep.

I do believe that my hosting company's 622,080 Kbps (622.08 Mbps) OC-12 might be a bit faster than my 56Kbps modem...

Its been brought up before. And its been kinda done.

1. Individual Hosting of AMVs
2. a-m-v.org
3. Waldo's FTP is an FTP dedicated to AMVs and the such.
2. a-m-v.org's AIM Chat Room.
3. a-m-v.org's room on DAL net via IRC.
4. And also in the works an AMV Server being designed on an existing P2P Network although it might be a month or so before that gets up full time.
5. Golden Donut Hosting by a-m-v.org this also might take sometime before this becomes availiable not too mention some cash....

Yeah so those are all the options one can get AMVs.
