WinRAR question

Postby DreamsofaCobra » Sun Apr 27, 2003 3:17 pm

Forgive me if this is the wrong forum, I didn't see a general computing... :(
Anyway, I have an AMV in DV compressed AVI format that comes out to about 1.1 GB that I want to burn to a CD. I compressed it to a RAR archive and it came out to about 519mb. Is this right? I decompressed it and watched it, and it looked alright, but really, all I wanted to do was compress a little and split the file onto 2 CD's. Can I do that and will it look better? I am just suprised at how much it compressed. Any help is appreciated. Also, would a zip file be better? The file is for Anime Expo, so I want it to be as good as possible...

DV actually can compress reasonably well with zip compression in certain circumstances.

There will certainly be no quality loss. Use the zip file.

RAR/ZIP are lossless, so you won't lose anything.

Yeah, it'd be kinda bad if you compressed some text/pictures in a zip file and they came out with half of the data missing...

It's amazing how many people have yet to discover the power of the Lessiss-Moore algorithm! :)
This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 512 character limit.

too late, vids sent, .rar used
I don't compress enough or need the space enough to use some weird compressor. (not that weird is bad, I just need something standard and useable by all) All I want is enough to fit on CD-R and I am happy :D
But thanks for the heads up. Always good to know about these things

In hindsight I would've felt really bad if he used LZip to compress his videos and sent em off to the competition.

Or, you can dive right in, grab the 1.0 tarball and start reducing your bloated files down to 10%, 15%, in some cases 0% of their original size!
