thornberrys

There was that song from the wild thornberrys that made it to the Academy awards. It's really really pretty. I was like, WHAT? wild thornberrys has an Academy award nomination?! However it's by Paul Simon and has beautiful lyrics. That's all I know/remember about the song. Other then it was a father/daughter thing.

Dude, Silverchairs "The Greatest View" has a little bit of a Parent-Child feel to it. Not the entire song, but a fair bit of it. Thats what I reckon anyway. Metallica's "The Unforgiven", if you actually listen to it, is about a boy struggling to grow up and....christ its really hard to put into words aswell. Fuck.

Father's Eyes - Amy Grant
Mama - The Spice Girls
3am - Matchbox Twenty
Daddy - Jewel (This one is actually about her friend's father, but most people miss that...)

Random thought: All this Metallica talk reminded me that "Until it Sleeps" is about James' father and dealing with his death... But it's not really obvious or anything, so I don't know if that would help. *shrugs*

also "mama said" by metallica

Mama she has taught me well
Told me when I was young
Son, your life's an open book
Don't close it fore it's done
The brigtest flame burns quickest
Is what I heard they say
A son's heart's owned to mother
But I must find my way
*Let my heart go
Let your son grow
Mama let your heart go
Or let this heart be still
Rebel my new last name
Wild blood in my veins
Apron strings around my neck
The mark that still remains
Left home at an early age
Of what I heard was wrong
I never asked forgiveness
But what I said is done
[* Repeat]
**Never I ask you
But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
Never I ask of you
But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
So let this heart be still
Mama now I'm coming home
I'm not all you wished of me
But a mother's love for her son
Unspoken, Help me be
I took your love for granted
And all the things you said to me
I need your arms to welcome me
But a cold stone's all I see
[* Repeat]
Let my heart go
Mama let me heart go
You never let me heart go
So let this heart be still

Just because nobody's said it yet, "Cat's in the Cradle" would be by Harry Chapin, IIRC. Though Ugly Kid Joe did a remake too. O_o

Uhh... I would've said "Still Fighting It" or half the songs by Everclear (Father of Mine or Sunflowers for instance). ;)

I agree wholeheartedly with "Mama Said."

My favorite father/son song ever has to be "Ghost of Freedom" by Iced Earth. The father fought in a war, died, and left his son to carry his legacy. In short. But I doubt that helps much... :?

BTW, are you looking for any particular POV? like, a story from the parent's point of view or the kid's?

(Started listening to Everclear again - arg, I forgot that this song "Sunflowers" makes me cry. GAH! I'm such a lamer ^_^;; )

This has me thinking now, so looking through some stuff...

Technically, U2's "Kite" is a parent addressing his kids about his own eventual death. It's an extremely depressing but lovely song.

I've heard Collective Soul's "Tremble for My Beloved" is about watching a child being born (The hour has begun / Your eyes have now opened / To a world where madness craves, to a world where hope's enslaved / I tremble for my love, always) ...but I could be wrong about that, and the song's like 75% instrumental anyway

Simon & Garfunkel "Mother and Child Reunion", though the words make very little sense ;)

Tori Amos' "Winter" is another father-daughter song, from the daughter's POV this time...might be too slow to sustain an AMV, though.

Barenaked Ladies' "Great Provider", father-son song from the son's POV, pretty sad

Of course there's Stevie Nicks' "Landslide" even though the freakin' Dixie Chicks are overexposing it to death :x

And I do believe that's all I've got. Just thought some that weren't RAH DEATH GRRR HATE BLAH! would be a nice contrast. ^_~

Mmm... good call. And the Dixie Chicks can never match up to Stevie Nicks. But I think Smashing Pumpkins has a pretty nice cover of it.

I thought of this one instantly for a father/daughter relationship:

Bob Carlisle - Butterfly Kisses
(written by: Bob Carlisle)
From the album "Butterfly Kisses"

There's two things I know for sure
she was sent here from heaven,
and she's daddy's little girl.
as I drop to my knees by her bed at night,
she talks to jesus, and I close my eyes.
And I thank God for all of the joy in
my life, But most of all, for...

Butterfly Kisses after bedtime prayer.
Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair.
"Walk beside the pony
daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny,
daddy, but I sure tried."
Oh, with all that I've done wrong,
I must have done something right
To deserve a hug every morning,
And butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet sixteen Today,
She's looking like her mamma
a little more every day.
One part woman, the other part girl.
To purfume and makeup,
from ribbons and curls.
Trying her wings out in a great
big world. But I remember...

Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer.
Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you daddy,
But if you don't mind,
I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong,
I must have done something right.
To deserve her love every morning,
And butterfly kisses at night.

All the prcious time
Like the wind, when the years go by
precious butterfly
Spread your wings and fly

She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise,
and I'll give her away.
Standing in the bride room
just staring at her,
she asked me what I'm thinking,
and I said "I'm not sure,
I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
Then she leaned over...and gave me...

Butterfly kisses, with her mama there
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk me down the aisle daddy, it's just
about time"
"Does my wedding gown look pretty
daddy?" "Daddy don't cry"
With all that I've done wrong,
I must have done something right
To deserve her love every morning,
and butterfly kisses
I couldn't ask god for more, man, this is
what love is
I know I've gotta let her go, but I'll always
remember
Every hug in the morning, and butterfly kisses...
