Why the hell is it so hard to make a original Idea now..

Sorry, I've already done a music video to that on April Fool's Day.

To fit in with Cage's theory that you are listening to what is going on around you, in this video you are watching what is round you including the reflections in your monitor :P

Heh. It would be funnier if it didn't make Xine's demuxer crash -- I suppose I'll have to report this video to Guenter Bartsch. :P

Dangit, though. That was one of the only (non-vulgar) really "original" ideas I thought I had. Guess I'll have to reach back further into music esoterica -- how about one to Antheil and Leger's (I think that's right) 1925 Ballet Mechanique? That's sure to grate (ha ha) a few people. :P

Sachiko M makes music using sine waves where if you move your head around you hear different harmonics.

If you could make an amv that was a stereograph to go with that, that would be cool :D

Shame my eyes are messed up so I can't see them.

...guess my theory that "obscure does not automatically mean deep, important, or original" really didn't go over well. ;)

Ah well, it's to be expected. People are always happy if they know entertainment that "few" people know. Makes them feel special and important. ;)

Meh.

I think your theory is ok, but there is more to it than that.

If someone says an AMV is "original", it's appropriate to ask him, "In what way?" For example, a love story AMV is not by itself original. A love story AMV using Oh My Goddess! is also not original; been done before. A love story AMV using Cosmo Warrior Zero is original in the sense that one has never been done before (at least I don't think it has). But it may not be original in concept, theme, execution, etc.

Well I don't intentionally seek obscurity but you have to admit that doing something obscure and different can have its appeal.

Anyway, as I've already said in this thread, doing "original" things is easy - doing original but good things is difficult.

Actually I found the definition of original to be quite interesting:

"original —adj. 1 existing from the beginning; earliest; innate. 2 inventive; creative; not derivative or imitative. 3 not copied or translated; by the artist etc. himself (in the original Greek; has an original Rembrandt). —n. original model, pattern, picture, etc. from which another is copied or translated. originality n. originally adv."

Guess that rules out all of my videos then ^_^

I brought those pieces up because -- well, they haven't been done before, and they open themselves up to an absolutely huge number of possibilities. I don't think I've ever seen an AMV to the Ballet Mechanique. Or, to go on AD's suggestion, an AMV rendered as one big stereograph.

Something that hasn't been done before certainly has a degree of originality to it.

Oh, and yes, I do enjoy knowing about things that most people don't know about. Call it elitism, call it ego-stroking, call it intellectual masturbation, call it whatever the hell you want. But I doubt that you don't derive the same pleasure from holding obscure knowledge.

I think you all are missing the point of AMV's and the songs that go with them.
People do not care what Video goes to which song; only bad videos with a song they like!

these have not been done yet:
Hakura ( Angelic Layer ) dancing to the DJ's graceful mix of Enya - Only Time.
the pink "cat girl" & "lone wolf" ( Tokyo Mew Mew ) hehehe, with the ears popping up at the wrong moment to "HEAVEN"-D.J SAMMY/YANOU.
Boys Be to "story of your heart"-D.J SAMMY/YANOU. ( mexican dance mix )
Wedding Peach to "so impulsive" - ? not sure ( college radio A-POP )

what they are tired of are DBZ to Creed, Nichel Back, or whatever name they call themselves to make mono-tone Canaidian Garbage!
for THAT is repulsive!
. well, so are those who have to scream into the mic with bad head-bangers PUNK.

I honestly don't feel that my ideas are more original than anyone else's but one thing I do always try and do is use unlisted music. It's weird seeing music of my youth from the 60's (well not really my youth but still a great era), 70's, and 80's just ignored for the hard rock stuff being filtered to us now. I wish people would really take a look at those musical era's, it make for alot more interesting vids IMHO. ^_^

I wonder what this hang-up with being original stems from? You can still make a great video that has absolutely 0% originality. It simply has to be damn good to stand out from the rest.

Of course, on the other hand, you can go for complete originality, but as mentioned previously, that tack could go horribly horribly awry and result in the most heinous act of video editing known to man.

But who says you have to be completely original? Simply introducing a novel twist to a basic concept can breathe new life into what would ordinarily be a stale "genre" video. You just have to make sure that your "original" idea or take is enough to differentiate and add that certain something to your video to make it stand out as being better.

But I say, before you start trying to be revolutionary and original, make sure you have the basics down. Make sure that your video editing skills are up to snuff to be able to perform the masterpieces you envision in your head first. Otherwise, you'll always be disappointed in the outcome (and probably other people too since there's nothing that can really offset sloppy editing).

Just some more thoughts on the subject...
My favorite video: Grilled Steak Trigun I LOVE THE COPS! Rargh!
I ain't 2 proud 2 beg! haha school rumble is great
Why do I always have the most preposterous sigs???
My current favorite thread. I'm a huge fan of GA-JAMMING.
