DVD sound volume

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Fri Aug 02, 2002 1:10 pm

When playing DVDs on my computer, it always seems like the output sound is like as silent as a CD rip. Then when I play it on my DVD player in the living room, I have to actually lower the volume because it's too loud.

I don't really mind changing the volume, but when I forget to lower the voume on my computer I get a blast of sound from Winamp or Media Player when I go to listen or watch something else.

So is there a way that I can make the sound on the DVD somewhat louder without changing the volume on my audio devices? (I'm using Intervideo WinDVD to play DVDs on my compute.) Also, when playing on TV is there a way to do the opposite, which is making the volume lower?

Thanks.

There's not really a way of fixing either.

It's all about how the sound is encoded. Some PC dvd players allow you to choose a profile that will boost various parts of the audio (power dvd has this option) but it's really only designed to make the vocals audible over the music and vice versa.

DVD audio is recorded quietly but PC players dont really offer any compensation for that. On the other hand, many set-top players over compensate for i, as you discovered.

There's nothing you can really do about it except use the volume controls.
