Conventions in New England??

Postby purelyswift » Tue Feb 18, 2003 12:50 am

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and have never been to a convention but they seem like a lot of fun. I reside at Bates college in Lewiston, ME but for an anime convention I'd be willing to go anywhere in New England or NYC. Boston would be ideal considering I have some friends there and it is easy to get to.

My Question: What are the upcoming conventions that will be in that area?? If anyone has information, links, etc about this please post!

Another thing, considering I run the Anime Club at my college, should I consider organizing a convention at the college??

AXNY was pretty much a one-shot thing, there aren't (to my knowledge) any immediate plans to hold another one.

Hmmm....some factors against this:

*nobody who does not live in Maine (or Canada, which is even worse) wants to go there off tourist season.

*it is damn tough to get hotel space anywhere in Maine; the rooms tend to be distributed over small motels and inns, and only open when they're being clogged by tourists from away.

*your college is in Lewiston. LEWISTON, man. (just joking; I went to Bowdoin, so it's kind of expected)

Seriously, you might have more success volunteering your services to help pump up PortCon, even though you're probably out for the summer by then. UMaine-Farmington also used to do a mini-con around spring break, but that looks as though it's been dead a couple years.

I ought to send this advice along to my own kouhai-tachi in BAS, but they don't listen to me anyways. Best luck with your club,

Thanks for the tips. Yeah I had realized that it's not exactly the ideal spot, but just something to toss out there.

Makes me wonder if Colby has an Anime Club. Maybe between the three of us there could be some sort of CBB convention (obviously held at Bates though because we're the happy middle).

Port-con is June so that's definately our summer and chances are I won't want to travel another 7 hours back up from my summer residence in NYC for that, but we'll see. You'll definately find me at Boston in April though and I'll see what kind of a crew I can muster.

I grew up in Lewiston, ME...on Franklin St as a matter of fact, closer to your cafeteria than you probably are. Lewiston sucks.

I strongly encourage you to come down to Anime Boston. It's going to be the largest anime convention in New England and perhaps the largest first-year anime convention. The pre-registration numbers are staggering!

Bowdoin?!

I lived in Brunswick for five years :D (5th grade through the beginning of 9th grade). That was a looong while back, though...

Scott Melzer is running the AMV contest at PortCon (I'll be helping him as much as I can...), and he said last year that it was a really nice con, overall.

AnimeNEXT is moving from Jersey to (actually) the same place at Shoujocon, this year (Rye, NY). Its first year was last year, and was really nice... will only get better this year :D.
