Problems fixed, now asking about compression

Postby Garylisk » Sun Jul 28, 2002 11:53 pm

I am wondering what would anyone in ehre reccomend as far as a codec to use and a bitrate or compression scheme to use for compressing these episodes of Sailor Moon now.

Again, I know its not anime related, but I know you guys, so I figured its best to ask those whom you know.

The episodes, when captured, were about 700MB in ATI VCR2 format, 320x240 res with good sound. I tried a couple things.

First I tried using DivX 4.12, doing a 2-pass VBR encode. This ultimately ended up with a video file that looked, arguable, better than the VHS tape ( ), but a hefty filesize of 300MB.

Then I thought back, and remembered that the Love Hina subs I used to have said "500kbps DivX" at the beginning, and they were tolerable quality, so I tried encoding with DivX 3.11 low motion at 500kbps 100% crispness. I also encoded the audio using mp3 (encoded to 22khz, 16 bit, mono (My VCR is mono, plus mono makes for smaller vile sizes).

That popped out a file that's 96.8MB in size, and looks only slightly worse than the VHS tape, but still great quality.

THe question is this: Is there any other way to get a 22 minute episode compressed mroe without losing any more quality? Anyone?

By the way, in case you're wondering, I got past the macrovision using a video clarifier box that De-Macrovisions the video feed.

Yeah yeah I was wondering....

Ha ha ha.

The only thing I can think of is to maybe err use Nandub to do a two pass on it with a lower bitrate, but that's going to not make a *lot* of difference really. You can decimate, the frames, convert fps / 2 which adds choppiness to some things, but would basically reduce your file by half.

I actually think 96megs for 22minutes is good, specially since it came from a VCR. Did you crop out the jitter lines at the bottom also???
