Um.

I said "not share bandwidth", not "not use bandwidth".

lol...Find this somewhat funny...Trythil...it is true though....Windows 98 can only really use about 256 megs of ram before having ram issues (old computer)....The more recent operation systems such as win 2k can only have 2 gigs of ram.....no more....I'm running a Dual AMD MP 1800's on a Tyan Tiger Sp2460 (something like that) I believe....With 2 gigs of pc 2100 ddr ram...Geforce 4 ti 4600....Sounld Blaster Audigy Platinum...DV 500+ and a few other goodies.....Windows 2k profressional as well...and I must say my editing is amaizing...I don't drop a frame at all.....But just to warn you...With dual processors you MAY have a lot of problems...I'm having problems with my DV500 sometimes in premiere where my computer performs physical memory dumps and restarts.....This also happens while playing counter strike (=(...).....

I don't really truth networks though...I've always had slow connections when it comes to networks...I don't know why....o_O

Actually no, the NT core can take plenty of RAM. At my old job we had this lovely 8-way Xeon NT4.0 server with 16GB of RAM. In the voice of Kuno the Karate Instructor from UHF: veeeeeeeery tasteeeeeeey.

you wont need a hub unless you've got more than 50 computers networked. otherwise, a switch is just a waste of money, and routers are for morons who want to spend $50 more than they have to.

Actually with how fucked up Roadrunner is setup, I have to have a router to be able to share the internet with the computers here.

same here, without the router we couldn't share the DSL. If I could dump the piece of shit, I would. It's a pain in the ass, but oh well.

Ikasu, that's a sweet setup man. I'm going for the the 2100's though! Physical memory dumps? hhhmm....Maybe i'll stick with 1 gig and see how that works out. then i'll go 1.5 and so on. :-D

BZZT! wrong answer. Small (4-16 port) switches are not significantly more expensive than unmanaged hubs anymore, and while you can get by with a hub, a switch lets you transfer data more quickly when the network gets busy, because you don't have problems with collisions.

If it's just you and 2 or 3 computers, you probably won't notice any difference, but have 3 or 4 friends over for a small LAN party, and things will get messy in a hurry on a hub, with eveyone leeching off each other, trying to game, access the net, etc.

Sure, you can use dual NIC's and have one machine act as a gateway for the others like I do, but that's cause I don't mind leaving my machine on all the time. A cheap little hardware router/gateway is silent, reliable, uses very little power, and is easy to set up. I assert that they have a very valuable place in the world.

I have a Tyan 2460 also, and two things have come to my attention regarding memory and this board.

1) you REALLY have to push to seat the DIMM's properly in it.

2) using the fourth RAM slot makes my system unstable.

I was using 4x256 DIMMs and sufered the same random reboots(NT crashing) that you describe. After much agonizing, and removing hardware, trying drivers, etc, I got it super stable simply by removing the fourth stick of RAM. Yes, they all passed 6 hours of running memtest.

You might want to pull that fourth stick for a few weeks and see what that does for your stability.

I'm completely new to networking, but don't worry I'm not going to come here and ask for answers. Anywho, I just wanted to comment that all 3 computers that are networked together ALL have their own NIC. Does taht help?????
