AX 2002 Contest...

Postby SpPANDA » Mon Feb 03, 2003 3:21 am

Greetings Daniel,

Please accept my apologies for taking so long to get back to you
regarding your award being shipped out. Shortly after the convention
last year I had a heart attack and then while recovering from that I had
to deal with Alzheimer dieses striking my family again. This has caused
6 months of my life to become rather in turmoil, and in turn put a lot
of things on hold.

I have your award trophy packed and ready to ship out. Please let me
know what address you would like it shipped to, and it will be on its
way this week. In addition due to the way things went last year and our
total lack of prize ceremony, I will be shipping you your prizes as
well. What they are I'll leave as a surprise. ;-)

I would like to apologize for how your video was presented on screen
last year. It was one of the few that no matter what I did Friday night
I couldn't seem to get it to re-render clean. I'm also sorry that the
fan dispute over the judging for the action category has happened,
although personally I'm glad your video ended up winning as the
Bebop/Dragonball Z video would have won for its comedy aspects, and not
really as an action video. If you are curious, your video did register
the loudest response from the audience during the review, and that was
what Michael called the winner from. We are completely re-doing the
judging system to work from ballots this year as opposed to the
"audience meter" in an attempt to raise the accuracy and fairness of the
judging process this year.

Thank you for entering the contest last year, and congratulations on
winning the award. I hope to see you this year to congratulate you in
person. =)

Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns you
have regarding the contest.

Sincerely,
James Dodd

with that said....

AX is too commercial for my liking. Please Otakon, don't be like them!

Ballots

Postby anneke » Mon Feb 03, 2003 8:32 am

They are really going to attempt Ballots.... That should be interesting. With no specific AMV contest staff, who are they going to get to count all the ballots. Oh well.

That's good to hear AX is finally shipping out the awards, glad to know that they're taking the amv contest way more seriously this year.

I've been a bit non-productive lately in amvs and I dunno if I'll get a new video done for AX in time. Despite what happened, I still had alot of fun competing and I'm looking forward to competing again if I can get my lazy ass in gear

If anyone gives you crap on the amv panel Panda, I'll be sure to speak in your defense. Good luck on your new projects man. :)

Looks like AX is steadily improving the contest. It's nice to see they learned from last year and hopefully we won't have any serious fiascos this year. I still would like to know where my "Christmas gift" from two years ago is.

I pretty much downloaded most of the stuff supposed to be on the "Christmas gift". Except for a few videos.

Forgot to add: The christmas gift was a copy of AX2001's contest I think.

A separate AMV staff simply isn't necessary. I agreed with you earlier that perhaps a separate staff would have been a good idea, but think about it.

Most of the situation regarding the AMV competition last year was a total lack of preparation. I think we can all agree that's been addressed, seeing as we've got rules in early February as opposed to late May.

If there were a separate AMV staff, they'd only have one day of actual at-con work at AX. Staff members are expected to earn their keep by working 40 hours at the convention in exchange for admission and a room. There isn't 40 hours of at-con work for an AMV staffer to do. That's why they'll always remain under the Tech staff banner.

As long as preparations are taken care of well in advance, there shouldn't ever be a major need for a separate AMV staff. There might be a sub-department within the Tech staff for AMV related functions who double as Tech staffers at con when not doing AMV related things, but that's as far as it'll likely go.

I doubt that "Christmas Gift" will ever see fruition. As you might've guessed, AX has a slight paranoia complex when it comes to AMVs, and the day AX gives out an archive of AMVs is the day AX lists the contest in the program guide.

Shawn, the former head Tech staffer, would've had no compunctions over doing it because he simply didn't care what could happen to AX after he left.

SpPanda,

I received the same email! I almost feel bad about all the emails I sent
out.

Nice to know that he pulled through, this could be a much more sad
situation.
I have sinned. I made a video I wanted to make that was music + anime + sync + action + effects/transitions. Oh lordy.

It will be interesting to see how ballots work. Otakon does it that way and it's quite a task to collect and count them! With a bigger audiance and only having one showing, there will be LOTS of ballots and they will have to somehow be handed out.. Quite a bit of logistics to work out, but then again I always did try to suggest to AX to use Ballots so it may be worth all the effort after all....

I think they should do the ballots in a scantron type fashion. Or they can play some exhibition videos and use that time to rally up the votes.
