I just remembered that you can play RealMedia in Media Player Classic by Gabset if you have Real's codecs installed, which I believe are available somewhere in codec-only format.
I'll search this out later for those of you who are anal and still wont download realone even though its got none of the vices of the other realplayers

If you're gonna be difficuly about it, I'll just get the XviD verison and make a DivX 5 version my damn self... It's not a big deal :P

And there's no fucking way I am grabbing that real version.. I have real installed for some reason (I think it was a friend's fault), but oh well... and I don't use WMP anyway, it sucks in comparison to the might that is Zoom Player :!:

GOD gary, I made a DivX 3.11 encode just like I said I would :P
but then I remembered that you were on 56k, and the 3.11 encode was 120mb.. and well :?

Anyway Media Player Classic isn't WMP 6.4 its a different player coded by this guy gabset on doom9 who took wmp 6.4's well liked look and added all kinds of functionality. Its definitely comparable to zoomplayer and bsplayer.

crapola. Seems I overestimated mpc. I thought it actually could parse RM streams on its own and just needec the actual codecs themselves to decode the video, but it actually just usues rp8 and realone's engine to play stuff :\

I know its possible though with helix. I have realmedia parsing and ra/rv decoding dlls right here from the first helix dna binaries release..

  Why so big? When I did a DivX 5.02 encode to the olver MI:1 XviD, it came out to be 79MB. I did a 2-pass VBR encode witht he quality setting to 1000kbps I believe. The quality of the vide after encoding is a hair less than the original XviD, but a nice managable size.

And I won't be dialup much longer.

My AOL trial period is over tomorrow, and then my household will be moving on to bigger and better things.

In a word: Cable.

I encoded it at about 1500 kbps :\ since I thought that was what I'd done the xvid encode at, expecting it to be like 100mb. I could make it like as small as the rm version but it would look like crap :\ alright I'll shoot for 70mb

Anyway I'm stuck in the mud with this danny's hosting is full mine is dead and I havent forced klinky to let me use his yet.
:\
damnit next time I'll get the video up before I make a thread about it :x

Don't worry about hosting sucksing right now.. there's a big internet attack going on. Some kind of worm is going around and hitting MS SQL servers.

Why not lower the resolution for smaller file sizes? (320x240 is less than half of 512x384, and will thus look just as good (regarding artifacting) at less than half the bitrate..)

thing is the fx and intro/bumpers of MI require a relatively high res :\
that and IMO 512x384 is even too low for most videos but :\ thats just me

I just tried playing it with "mplayer -fs -vop scale=320:240", that is full screen after scaling it to 320x240. Sure it looks worse, but I can still read the text. And with a better scaler (one that isn't optimized for speed..) I'm sure it could look quite decent. Certainly better than encoding it to 50MB without scaling it, no matter what codec you use. (RM might avoid artifacting better than most other codecs, but it drops frames instead. I would expect the sequence with every 3rd frame inverted looks quite odd in the RM version..)

In an ideal world all videos would be in some enormous res without any artifacting and download in 3 seconds, but in the real world I think a low res is better than a lot of artifacting, or too huge a file.

well Real9 barely ever drops frames in my experience, only at low low bitrates. At 800kbps it does more than fine. I'll try resizing to 448x336 just for the heck of it, but I doubt it'll be much of an improvement over the 512x384 version :\

Finally got them hosted somewhere. Thanks in a big way to CArnesen for volunteering this FTP server. Access the originally mentioned RealVideo version (50mb) and XviD version (102mb) here:

Address: dsl.darkstarpro.com
User: mission
Password: improbable

The rules:
1 Connection per IP Address, maximum 5 users at a time. Connections that are idle for more than 1 minute will be booted, and anyone that thinks that when a server is full they can keep trying to connect every 5 seconds should tread lightly.

Its a good hold over until my friend finally gets his crappy server fixed, just be patient with the downloading :\ and enjoy.
