If I walk into my local Fred Meyer store here. Is spy a $60 VHS VCR and a bunch of VHS tapes on the cheap.
I don't see a fucking trace of Beta anywhere in that store. I doubt many A/V stores are going to carry video beta tapes. The cloest Fry's is a 20minute drive and I am not sure if they even carry them at this Fry's.
It's just, ANY MAGENETIC MEDIA IS BOUND TO FAIL SOONER OR LATER.
Your TV shows will probably look like ass in 20yrs if you can even hook them up to a TV in 20yrs.
You're most likely going to lose interest in this project within a few months. Seeing as how you like to splatter the forums with stupid and useless threads like a child with ADD after eating too many popsicles. I don't think your attention will hold out.
If I really wanted to record shit off the TV and save it(BTW I can't find much shit worth saving off the TV since most of it is shit). I will just buy 4pack of tapes and then put it back in it's cover and place it in a cool, dry, dark place for all eternity. Just because one VHS tape failed doesn't mean all VHS tapes fail. I have abused and copied over a blank VHS tape a bunch of times already and it still looks FINE.
Just the thought that you're going to go out of your way to make it as much of a pain in the ass as possible all for TV shows that you're probably never going to watch again seems completely idiotic and stupid. :\
Most people have VHS decks because in the last 10 -15yrs all new releases have been VHS! When was the last time you saw something released using Beta?? Yeah. So why would we have a bunch of people who already have a perfectly capable VHS recorder run out and buy a Beta deck just so they can record their shows off the TV?
Also VHS is not shit, VHS still looks GOOD ENOUGH and the fact that it has lasted so long is testament to that. Sure it wasn't as good as Beta, but it atleasted allowed people to watch movies in their homes.
DVD has now eclipsed home Beta & VHS decks, so they're starting to die out. But anyways. VHS is not "OMG TEH SUX0RZ".
This thread might as well been titled "LOOK AT ME I AM FOOL, WATCH ME WASTE MONEY ON POINTLESS SHIT".

Dear CaTaClYsM, you really should quit this debate becouse it's quite pointless. If you really love Beta that's absolutely fine by me and I doubt anyone here is going to stop you from purchasing the equipment.
But you can't expect everyone on this forum to CONVERT! (cross held high) just becouse of your belief. What's the purpose of arguing?
Do you really think people will see "the light" if you just yelled it from the rooftops?
51 posts should suffice for this thread.

Just get a $60 VHS 2head VCR and a 4-pack of VHS tapes for $6. :\
Beta is just going to cost you more and really, I doubt you'd notice the quality improvements.

Betamax is obsolete, Sony announced that about 6 months ago. It's a good format, but cannot live up to today's standards.
For example, my mom has a beta tape of "The Breakfast Club", which she recorded off TV a good 10-12 years ago. It's watchable, but has static on the top and bottom of the screen, etc.
The tape is stored in her video tape cabinet with her other 2-3 dozen tapes. (VHS and Betamax)
It's not going to produce results that are worth the price and trouble. But you can be convienced otherwise.
klinky wrote:Also I should note that many TV shows are now coming out on DVD, in box sets. This is going to look alot better then a Beta tape could hope to achieve, it doesn't have some sort of network logo in the lower right and you're supporting the series you so love so much.
You'd be better off just buying the DVDs, if when they come available. If it's worthwhile series, there will be DVDs eventually.

Mr Pilkington wrote:Dude! CaT! Seriously! Chill. Don't blow all your cash on Beta. For the same price as the upkeep and Tapes you could get you a cheep DVD-R. Or hell, at the current C:Q (Cost:Quality ratio) get you a +RW. It really would smarter than blowing your wad on a Beta. I mean good god man! Sure I use beta but that's only because I have had a player since the mid 80's. And it's not like I use it for editing (anymore), I prefer DVD quality for my videos. So take the opinions of the ones around as constructive criticism. Please we beg of you, don't waste your money.
