VCD Compatibility

Post by Bushido Philosopher » Wed Jul 24, 2002 3:10 pm

I'm sorta new to the VCD section of video so bear with me...

I'm under the impression that VCDs are MPEG-1 and SVCDs are MPEG-2.

What encoding procedures do the MPEG video files have to be under to work on a DVD player?

Here's what I think the conditions are:
Frame size: any size
Frame rate: either 23.976 or 29.97 only
Bitrate: any
Sound: 44.1 Khz, any bitrate

....if I'm wrong in any section please tell me so that I don't end up wasting tons and tons of CD-Rs. I've tested a home-made VCD on my player and it works so you can count I sorta know what I'm doing. I'm just wondering what restrictions I'm set to.

Actually, there are very strict frame size and bitrate settings for something to be VCD and SVCD compliant.

Open up TMPGEnc and load the VCD/SVCD settings, you'll see what they are.

Frame size: 352x240 for NTSC or 352x288 I believe for PAL (I always use NTSC)
Frame rate: use 29.97
Bitrate: 1150kbps
Sound: 44.1 Khz, 224kbps

It's much easier just to load the vcd template for TMPG :)

If your source is 23.976fps, you might as well use that framerate to get a better-looking end-product. :-)
