FREE MONEY: Prices too high for 6 years. Sorry, here's $20.

Postby Phade » Tue Jan 07, 2003 7:28 pm

Hey All,

Seems that the music industry said, "Yeah, we price gouged you consumers for 6 years. To say we're sorry, here's $20 each." From Jan 1, 1995 through Dec 22, 2000, music companies fixed prices high just because they could. As part of a class-action settlement deal, several major music industry leaders (Bertelsmann Music Group, EMI Music Distribution, Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corp., Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Trans World Entertainment, Tower Records and Musicland Stores) agree to shell out $44 million in twenty-dollar bills, but only one per person. (Full story here.)

So if you want $20 and are a US citizen, you have until March 3, 2003 to go here and claim your cash:

Wouldn't that make a nice donation to the Donut? ;-)

Eh oh!

Cash Distribution

The cash paid by the Defendants, after the payment of attorneys' fees, litigation and Settlement administration costs, shall be distributed to consumers who purchased Music Products. The number of claims filed will determine the actual amount of the individual refund but will not exceed $20.00 per claimant. If the number of claims filed would result in refunds of less than $5.00 per claimant, there will be no cash distribution to individual consumers. Rather, the cash portion of the Settlement shall be distributed to not-for-profit, charitable, governmental or public entities to be used for music-related purposes or programs for the benefit of consumers who purchased Music Products.

Your fault for being born to Canadian parents. I mean, was it really that hard to transfer to an American womb?

I'd probably try to claim some cash, but I have this problem called "being tired" and "kind of lazy".

Hey,

You can claim online. All you need to do is answer "yes" to three questions, fill out your name and addrees, and that's it. There's only 30,000 claimants so far. As long as it stays below 2,000,000 claims before March 3, it's $20 each. I know The Org is popular and all, but I don't think we're going to send them 1,970,000 referrals. ;-)

What's really cool is that you don't need to have actually bought any music to get the money, you just have to SAY that you bought music.

That's hella sweet.

Phade is like a reassuring father figure or something.

Has anyone filed? I'm not terribly down with them wanting the last 4 digits of my Social Security number...

As long as they don't have the other 5 digits, it's all good :)

I think the Western governments (not just America, mind you) have given plenty of aid to Ethiopia. And will probably provide more in the future. The US alone leads in foreign aid. I'm sure at least $1 of my taxes has gone to Ethiopia, and probably more than that.

Where's your furor over Robert Mugabe, the leader of Zimbabwe? He kicked off farmers (mostly white, left over from the days Zimbabwe was known as Rhodesia and was a British colony) who knew what they were doing and gave the land to, not actual farmers, no, get this, he gave it to people who were in his misguided rebel army. Most of whom know shit about farming, which is why Zimbabwe is having food problems now. Ethiopia is (was?) suffering from famine, a natural thing. Mugabe helped cause Zimbabwe's food problem.

Or will you only complain when it makes the US and US interests look bad because you're not getting $20 from a record company?

Anyhow, this is a Phade thread, so it's really not proper to argue in here, now that I think about it.

Methinks it is one of those "home market" technicalities, which are pretty stupid/unfair if you know anything about what they're like/supposed to do.
