The manga is actually pretty awesome. The anime isn't really that different. They added some stuff to the anime to flesh out the characters and they took out a bunch of the gore (which only serves to make the manga cooler by comparison because you get the full impact of how horrific their situation is). But most of what's added in the anime isn't really added to the main char., but rather the supporting char. storylines. They changed the dialogue for the anime a little bit here and there (hard to tell because of different translators but you can sort of see the meaning in each translation pointing to differing dialogue in the 2 different raw media).
I'd say at this point, I don't see either one being better or worse than the other, just slightly different in small details. Dunno if that'll change, as I'm only on ep 10 of the anime and still issue 14 of the manga. The fact that each manga issue is around 35-45 pages makes it slower going than say, Naruto or One Piece, which I also read.
