One more thing I forgot that was mentioned in the winners intro video (which few people saw). If you won something, and you're here at the con, please stop by Con Ops in the GSEC (with ID) to claim your prize and lovely certificate! They're so suitable for framing, we framed them ourselves.

And now some thoughts on this year's proceedings.

Selecting and Sorting the Finalists
Once again, we managed to get every finalist into a category that its creator had indicated on the entry form; and once again, every finalist received votes. This is always heartening to see, because it means we were justified in selecting them to be finalists in the first place.
I don't anticipate making significant changes to this process for next year, except that this time I'll send out invites for the prescreening further in advance!

Contest Intro
I think more people got this year's reference, thankfully. However, I don't consider this intro SO CRAZY AWESOME that it must be reserved for those who actually come out to the con. So here it is.

At the Con
I want to continue to use the 2/3 ballroom space for our contest screenings as long as possible, because it's working out very well for us. However, the "simulcast" setup we had for our Saturday screening is something we will never do again, as I and our head of A/V Tech agreed. Simply too much stress to be worth it.

The problem is that we DID fill up the room pretty well by the time it was over. If we'd started at noon instead of 11, who knows -- we might even have hit capacity. So if the con continues to split the ballroom in three on Saturday next year, then we might need to move that screening into Main Events, being the only available space bigger than the ballroom. Which wouldn't be SO bad, now that we know that Main Events has 16:9 screens.

We did have a bit of a scare when the extension cord came loose and we lost power to the DVD player on Saturday, and then the projector lamp overheated. However, we recovered from that as well as we could, and the contest only ended up running 5 minutes over its timeslot. With all of the uncertainty surrounding the simulcast, this could have been a LOT worse. So thanks to all of the staff who helped us out, and thanks to all of our viewers for being patient with us.

The whole idea of giving out golf pencils worked VERY well -- while last year the most voted-on category got 208 votes, this year it was up to 385! And considering where we were two years ago, seeing growth like this is pretty thrilling.

Just like last year, the AMV contest winners were played right before the Masquerade on Saturday evening. The only problem is that the Masquerade seating was VERY delayed -- I was not there to witness why, so don't ask. So they had to start playing the winners while they were still seating everyone, with the result that it by the time everyone was actually seated, we were on the last one or two winners. Still, they greatly enjoyed seeing the winning videos, and the Masquerade only started about 10 minutes late.

You're lucky I haven't shipped them out yet. The certificates look something like this:

Each winner also receives a DVD or Blu-ray prize from among those graciously donated by our industry sponsors! I tried as much as possible to make them match the categories, but of course I can only work with what we're given.

Fixed in the above post, though of course we can't do anything about the ballots at this point.

Also, I want to assure everyone that we will not be framing the winners' certificates next time, after seeing what happened with shipping them out this year. Not so much for the loss of the frames -- because they were not expensive -- but because of the hazard of broken glass. Nobody should have to deal with that, and I can only apologize deeply for my inexperience in shipping such items.

If in the future we get the approval to start awarding trophies, I will be devoting all of the spare thick bubble wrap we have to making sure we do not have a similar mishap again. (The first AMV trophy I won, 10 years ago, was broken on arrival, so I know how it feels.)
