Macross Zero - Wow.

Postby iserlohn » Fri Dec 27, 2002 11:01 pm

Just saw the first episode of Macross Zero. All that I can say is...wow. Wow, wow, wow. This is the stuff dreams and legends are made of, folks. The mood is somber, but fans can already see a couple of references if they look closely. The vocal cast is incredible, and so far the music (almost entirely incidental except for a song on a radio and the ED theme) is brilliant.

And the animation?

This may make me some enemies, but I'd have to say that it rivals Ghibli at some points. Kawamori and co. went all out for this, and the battle sequences are mouthwateringly beautiful. I feel like I need to watch it again, just to grasp everything that was going on during the sequences visually, there was that much detail. The 3D-CG was...wow. Wow. Must breathe...and then watch again.

Dude...there is no way 3D-CG could ever rival Giblis animation. Its fundamentally impossible.

I dunno. I saw Spirited Away in the cinemas, and while it was impressive, M0 was mindblowing. I haven't wanted to frame by frame a sequence of anything that I wasn't AMVing with in ages, let alone watch it twice in one night. This is the good stuff, folks. Many cheers to Bandai for making the 20th anniversary edition one worth watching.

Yes, it was good until I saw the DAMN MECH >_<

I am hating mechs, they're everywhere.

Of course maybe Macross had mechs to begin with and is a pioneer in mecha, but fuck. I was like, these planes are RAD!

Then this mech comes out of no where and I am like.. "DAMN JAPS MUST YOU RUIN EVERYTHING WITH MECHS!!!" {shaking fist}

I'll try to make it past that, but other then that it is VERY FUCKING AWESOME. The sequence when he's avoiding the heat-seekers ^_^ FUCKING SWEET.

Nice CGI ^_^ supremo...

I made a little video clip of that scene....

Klinky: Sorry, Macross is one of THE definitive mecha shows (the other biggie being Gundam). I like the characters and storytelling better in the Macross universe, though, even Macross 7 where it's just silly for half the series. The big deal about Macross was that it was the first anime to feature transforming mecha as we know them today (not sentai robots which combine). The idea of a fighter plane that transforms into a humanoid robot (as well as the hybrid GERWALK) was kept secret from the public until the series aired, and both the OP theme and the eyecatch were changed for the first episode so as not to give away the secret.

Oh, and another note, Macross shows tend to be focused more on the characters, storyline, and musical aspects (Minmay IS important, like it or not) than your stereotypical giant robot. The love triangle is more important in the latter half of the original series than the war or the robots.

Macross Plus was amazing and will always be one of my favorite anime's. Same with Robotech(and no I dont give a shit how they changed it cause it was still really entertaining) However, one of them, it was a movie, I think it was Macross 7 The Movie or something, was retarded. I mean, in the end, almost everyone was killed and even the Macross was destroyed. The main bad guy was some big pissed off retard. And there was no depth or anything to it, just got really drawn out and boring. To be honest I dont remember it that well, but I know it sucked.

That was Macross II if i remember properly. MII is so bad that it's been disowned from continuity (now referred to as an "alternate universe"). The Mac7 movie is only 30 min. and fairly incomprehensible to people not familiar with the continuity of Macross/M7, but at least it's got a couple of good songs. A lot of people in the US don't like Mac7, but I loved it. As always, YMMV.

What exactly is Macross Zero ?

Is it a re-telling of the original with new animation or is it something different ?

Macross Zero is a 5 episode OAV prequel to the original SDF Macross. The only character from the original who shows up is Focker, and according to Kawamori at AX, Mac0 is a story which has been covered up and not revealed so far in the Macross universe. Should prove interesting once the next episode or so come out.
