How do you get your inspiration back?

Post by HalOfBorg » Tue Feb 12, 2013 2:07 pm

I am off of the chemo (mostly) for the time being, and since I'm feeling better without it I hoped to do some editing again, but just can't do anything. All of the good ideas I have in my notes seem flat, and what I WAS working on just - well, it sucks.

Anyone know a good way to get inspired again? Or did I have just so many in my that wanted to get out and now I'm done? :uhoh:

I just watch a lot of AMVs, for inspiration, or watch some anime and hopefully find a show I want to edit with, or look for some music that I want to edit with.

My ideas tend to come from actively listening to music... So, a service like Pandora does it for me. If you can't freely associate the music you're hearing with anime you remember watching, it won't work though.

Music does it for me as well. I just listen to songs and eventually I'll hear something that catches my creative fancy and start coming up with ideas from there.

Another thing that helps me sometimes is watching movies and what not. Often times the movie will put me into a creative mood and then the credits music comes on and I often get video ideas for said ending song.

Other times, I realize I have accumulated enough animated gifs and just go to town putting them on a timeline to a random song I picked out for the video.

I look the inspiration out of anime. Watching movies, like Fast and Furious suddenly, pumps me up :bzz:

I haven't finished a video for 6 months until I joined the CDVV IC. So maybe try joining an Iron Chef contest for fun! I think being put on the spot to create a concept in a few days really gets the editing gears going.

At least it did for me :P

Just keep doing what you love to do. Or try to do something you never tried before.

At our Art school we would be given an exercise meant to improve our ambition and goal setting. It takes making some poster designs from photographs that depict various stages of your work (ideally four, five, posters to contain a whole story of the process). You should hang them around your apartment, in such way that it escorts you towards the main door of the place (daily exit into daily routine which is often among the motivation burners) with the most advanced image. This "step", a last glimpse before exiting your place can serve as a psychological tool to keep you aware of your passion for self-expression, by installing large images of your own work-in-progress. It served the purpose for several of my colleagues, as well as me.
