Assistance With Colorful Shockwave Effect

Hello,

I would like to know how to create a colorful shockwave effect. I have made a clip of two different effects. I would like to know how to do either one, though I am partial to the second one. http://youtu.be/VjNObdHDBDA
I am using Adobe After Effects CS5
I only have the plug-ins that come with After Effects out of the box.
