I have 350gb at the moment and a lot of raw episodes to convert, will be sort of a pain in the ass, dang it. I was happy with DivX till I find this forum and what people really use for better editing. There's no way to get the same quality with a small file size? Knowing that I can encode to .mp4, there's another way? Or I have to stick with those options?
You might get better results using Lagarith, but it's a lot slower. I advise people to shy away from using lossy codecs because they usually aren't encoded in a way that makes them frame accurate and they just end up causing more problems IMO.

I encode everything to UTVideo or lagarith nowadays. I use a 1tb hard drive for all my editing and its more than enough.

Isn't better just convert pieces of the episode that you will use to use less hard drive space?

Yea, if you don't have the diskspace, "subcliping" is a good alternative to encoding the whole thing.

I use lagarith on everything and my Episodes of things average about 8 gigs or so. This is extremely manageable, especially with TB drives being rather cheap nowadays.

I also never encode audio though, because I know I'm just going to be editing with the source, and not using the audio, and that also makes the file smaller.

Thanks for all of the replies! But AVI does not work on my Sony Vegas, it only comes out as audio.
And I honestly don't even know what codecs are, can any of you explain it to me?

codecs is like the family root of a particular file type. Your Avi doesnt work because it is probably not in lossless form. You can make it lossless by running it through avisynth and virtualdub. There should be a guide somewhere in the org but I cant seem to find it now.
