It was ignored in the Golden Globe nominees, so don't hold your breath.

Plus, it may be considered a 2001 release, I'm not sure how those idiots^h^h^h^h^h^h people at theAcadmey judge these things.

Three things:

1. This year, I don't really consider the Golden Globes as a major precursor for the Oscars when it comes to the Animated Film category, especially when you consider that the other favorite for Best Animated Film, Lilo and Stitch, didn't get a nomination itself. All it really does IMO is give the Wild Thornberrys Movie and Spirit: Stallion of Cimmeron a little boost for a possible nomination this year.

2. I don't think you need to worry that Spirited Away's 2001 release will prevent it from being nominated. As long as it's released in America within two years of its original release and it doesn't appear in any other medium (i.e. television) for six months after its original release date (June 2001), Spirited Away is eligible for the Oscars.

3. There's a possibility of FIVE nominations in this year's Best Animated Film category. If so, then Spirited Away will easily get a nomination.

It's stuff like this that gets my goat about The Mouse. If Disney had spent a fraction of the money it devoted to that soulless, derivative tripe called Treasure Planet, they could've had a bigger hit and therefore (what ultimately matters to 'em, I feel) more box office revenue.

And what's the end result? TP sinks with little notice in short order while Spirited Away plugs along on the art show circuit thanks to word-of-mouth and critical acclaim.

If SA doesn't get an Oscar nod (or a win, I pray), then I think I'll have to go get drunk.

Hell, drunk if it does, drunk if it doesn't, drunk if it comes close.

Well that is what I thought disney was susposed to do with spirited away release it like it was a regular disney film. But instead it plays only in the wierdo theatres with a bunch of artsy fartsy crap. And still does decent. Disney needs a check up from the neck up. Who the hell would want to see something retarded like treasure planet anyway?

Hmmm, Spirited Away is coming to Laramie in March and we are back of beyond, so it is slowly trickling out.

However, I suspect Disney is waiting for the Oscar hype to really begin, and for live action competition like Harry Potter and LOTR to start to fade before it tries to give the movie a push into wider distribution.

Down in LA Spirited Away wasnt treated that bad. It got like a 2 week run at the Egyptian and played in some bigger theaters too for a couple weeks. The movie actually grossed a couple million dollars only playing at around 100 theaters nation wide, which is pretty damn good. For those who dont know, the Egyptian is a really old, but really nice theater(recently upgraded with digital projection, and god damn does it look amazing) that only plays one movie at a time. So for 2 weeks, all you could see there was Spirited Away. Haiyo Miazaki also attended the premire there. Definately more exposure than Princess Mononoke got, not that Disney still couldnt have put more effort into promoting it.
