Compression? Effects? Even an issue?

Post by zibbazabba905 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 8:25 am

Not sure which topic this should go under but first, visuals:

Original source:

Rendered once:

With effects:

Is all that compression artifacts on the wall because of the 2x rendering, or some side effect of the effects? I'm going to be adding a light blur and flecks to it, am I making too big of a deal of it? There's no easy way to fix it at this point, right? I guess how do I avoid it next time, which part of the "render as..." box do I need to pay attention to?

And what infos do I need to add to help answer my rambling questions?
Vegas pro 10, I set everything to "allow source to set frame/size" what have you.

It's a side effect of the effect you used. It's increasing the contrast to huge amount along with the other things it's doing, so of course it's going to make gradients banded. Find another way to achieve the look you want without getting the gradients to look like that. Alternatively, apply some deband/dither/grain to the output.

The 'Remove Grain' effect can be okay at removing some compression artifacts. I've used it on some DSLR footage. You'd want to put it at the top of the effects chain however.

I use the "Smart Smoother" that comes with "Mike Crash Sony Vegas filter & transition package" for simple compression artifacts like that in Sony Vegas - though I'm sure people will tell you that I'm doing it all wrong.
