Here are the two clips I asked to use from Captpan's work this year. Maybe more if I think on it, but I'm also going to make a bit of a logo for him near the end for the credits. They're quick ones. It was exceedingly refreshing to be able to make a couple clips in as many hours...

Anyway, these and the one I posted above open to critique or comments as usual.

Is everyone else doing okay with their thing? We haven't heard from Miko in a while, or moonbunnychan, are either of you lurking?

Deuce, please message them or something.

I emailed Scott from Otakon to let him know we're refining ReHeated, forewarning about AMVS6 being on the usual "schedule," and reassuring that I have a couple of "Good Idea; Bad Idea" clips working.
There were a couple of "re-added" clips I had trouble locating.
Still can't find them so I may have to cut them out of their respective AMVS final copies.
I'm apprehensive, though, about going over a half-hour.
Sure, four hours is lot of time to fill each night but since this is considered "classic," we'll still be competing against everyone else who wants their previous work shown.
Since ReHeated isn't a parody "movie," I don't want to monopolize time someone else might have something worth watching to put in, yanno?
Or am I being too generous? :P

I also have two or three AMVS clips on the time line.
No, seriously. :P

Finally, the word has gone out that the initial deadline is looming and we need material ASAP.

That's all I have for today...

Actually, it's three hours per night of fanparodies. Six hours total, so we have more room than that thankfully :D Also, Scott's impressions were that he loves 'Otakon Special Editions.' Like things with added stuff for Otakon, and this version of Reheated can be as much as 40 minutes he said. I mentioned that a couple months ago. Obviously we have a fall-back to bring it down to 30 minutes easily should there be any conflict, and actually that will make Scott much happier to know he has ten minutes of leeway in either direction, so no worries there. It's great to keep the other productions in mind, though, I'm sure he'll appreciate that.

Sorry for dropping the ball on clip arrangements for Reheated again. I was so intent on finishing the Angel Beats clip and I moved directly into Captpan's so I could guarantee I got them out of the way so I could start fresh on the next clip on my next day off. We still have some time, I'll make it a priority now that I have the clips done. It really is down to the small details now that will strengthen the entire thing, like the cluster of musical and then non-musical clips at the beginning. Once that's taken care of, I think it'll be pretty much done, give or take ending possibilities.

I am indeed lurking. I've got some stuff, though not as much and I don't think I've got anything that's a real zinger.

I was going through old posts and couldn't figure out if we'd ever come up with a running thing. I'm finishing up my stuff and wanted to know if I could contribute to that in some way.

That's the one issue remaining really. Thankfully a running gag isn't a necessity to make a funny production, but it definitely is something that make the entire production stronger. Previous running gag ideas this year have been too general to actually generate a strong idea.

If we wanted to, we could return to some of the older running gags this year actually. It would be a tad risky, but considering we have the gags showing up this year again in Reheated on the classic night, it wouldn't actually be uncalled for to revisit them. That will be a bit tough in its own right though.

I guess for a bit of an exploration, we can again consider what worked in the past. If we think of similarities, "Smoke" from AMVS2 and the Osaka 'bleeps' from AMV Hell 3 have a similar basis. The Osaka bleeps were a play off of a previous joke from AMV Hell 2, so that's a possibility. We can look at a fan favorite joke from reheated and see if a running gag can be drawn from that. For example there have been two Gundam Wing "Yoiks and away!!" clips in different Salads. But we could actually have everyone make their own version because it can go in many different directions creatively (several former clips can, actually). I made the first two, so everyone else can make their version? I used my Gundam one as an example, but it could work for many of them I'd think. Maybe we can get ideas if everyone here takes a quick glance through Reheated again with 'running gag' in mind? We are established enough to allow jokes built on older jokes I think and it wouldn't be too strange if done with consideration. That Gundam Wing one and clips like it would work because it works both connected, and unconnected to the past for old and new audiences.

Your Geico Money idea spread well to a couple other creators and ended up having a lot of variety. We can again take something that's pop-culture based and keep putting it in. Heh, I just thought of this, but maybe one of Captpan's clips could work. This is similar to the explosion idea from last year (gee I wonder why :) ), but what if we kept blowing up the Death Star? Random unrelated stuff just causes the same Death Star explosion footage to appear in ironic situations, with Captpan's clip being the first one in the lineup. Hell, I'd even be willing to mask in the Death Star beams for anyone into any scene they want once they're done. It's less than an hour to do, I'll just need lightly compressed footage through dropbox.

Other than that, of course there are other great commercial characters that can be used in similar ways, but of course that's similar to Geico Money and runs the risk of audiences who know us to recognize the similarity.

AMV Hell 5 did "Always" and "Halo" as musical running gags, and those failed for the most part. They were too popular, everyone knew them, and got sick of them in pop culture. We just need to avoid something that has been used in too many places, and most of all.

How does everyone feel about these types of directions?

Just got a clip from TwilightChrono and, I think, it won't be the last.
I've been waiting since AMVS3 for him to jump on board.

Gael...of the clips you sent me, the Mononoke is my favorite.
The unexpected cameo and the look on her face and then he starts singing along...I lol'd.
Also...Captpan certainly likes to go for impact, eh? :P

Susan...As far as a running gag, I can't see that anything has been decided.
You seem to be magical where that's concerned so, if you have anything to show, please do.

I'm have two or three quick clips coming by way of K-On! and Twisted Sister and probably a MLP song or two.
I'm gonna be one stressed pony by the time AMA rolls around since both this and the AMV contest are gonna come down to the wire.
So, at Otakon, expect a slightly amplified version of the me you saw last year.

Anyway, I'm trying to not panic or flip out...yet...as usual. :P

As usual, Deuce, the ones posted here are just for critique reasons so people can comment about any issues, and I've done some changes based on suggestions since then. The finals I want to either send to you over dropbox or via my site in DV like before for highest quality. I forget, do you use Dropbox btw? Scott does, I think it'll help get everything to him directly without any hassle when the time comes as well.

I'm still juggling between the idea of wanting the Mononoke clip to start where it does, or as Warlike Swans suggested, starting at "The forest spirit wants you to live." There's something about having that time to let the audience get lulled into the scene that still makes me want to try it, but to be honest, I'd like all of you to tell me where you think it works best and based on what everyone says will decide.

If anyone hasn't seen the clip yet , please take a look and tell me your honest opinion on that timing:

http://davidkrein.net/MononokeTest.rar

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Captpan's a master of impact. The chosen clips were my choices... go figure I would choose explosion clips ^^ They're just some of the few clips that aren't completely batshit crazy. Youtube poops are not known for coherence at all. If you saw either of the ones those clips come from, you'll see what I mean.

In fact, have at it! :D There are actually several scenes from these I wanted to ask him to use. Especially at 1:22 of the Higurashi one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XpNe-SbBuI (Main "Poop" starts at 1:20. The beginning is a massive inside joke between Youtube Poop creators, it barely makes sense even to youtube poop fans :P Following that is a remix of the intro of Higurashi playing with editing)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNR3wRJHjNE&feature=plcp
Here's the Haruhi one. Nuff said :)

thanks! I haven't seen that yet but I will check it out now!

I am working on redoing my StarGate blooper clip (for those who remember me throwing it out there last year) to submit for this go around and will hopefully have that sent your way soon. Once the first video goes out and I see what we have I generally get inspiration and can crank out a few more clips...that is if all my creative juices aren't spent from last year :( I will do my best though!

I imagine people are like me and having it down to the wire lol. Actually I'd be done right now if I hadn't had to reconvert a lot of source video that somehow come out looking unbelievably glitchy.
Out of curiosity how much do you have time wise right now. Most of my stuff is in the 10-15 second range so I can't say I'll really be filling out the time.

Based on my clips once they're fully edited and submitted, Warlike Swans' work, and a couple submissions by Boneheimer and Twilight Chrono that aren't posted here, I'd imagine we're somewhere around the 6-8 minute mark perhaps? Don't worry about any of your clips being short or anything like that. Just do whatever you think is funny and the project will be what it is. AMVS2 was like 16 minutes long, 4 minutes of which was the repetition of "The Song that everybody knows" and was solid. It'll surprise some people if we have a shorter project this year, but as long as it's good, so be it.

As for the running gag though, did any of my thoughts above make any sense to you? The Death Star idea is similar to the explosion one, but different enough to not cause any issues. Plus "It's so fluffy!!" was much more popular last year.

That's another thing worth considering. "It's so fluffy" was a line that really worked on audiences during Despicable Me because of its context. It was just a great scene and a great line with a character that had established herself as unbelievably adorable, and so really worked well last year. Any other scenes in recent movies that have given that feeling for people?

I say we give it at most another couple weeks, until about May 15th at the latest. Then make a decision. I think the Death Star one has potential, while also being very simple to pull off. It may not be the best, but it can be executed quickly, and in general fits the bill in that the entire audience can get the joke. We just need to come up with different things that would be absurd to cause the Death Star explosion.

Again, it's on the table right now just to make a decision. I think it has the potential to be decently funny, so it works for a placeholder. Let's get an even better one!

A contributor who sent me something the other day has this to offer and I thought it might work for a gag this year but I'll let you all tell me what you think:

"This is an idea snagged from the youtube sensation "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and the millions of parody videos that are named "[pony's name].mp4." They all use the same song and the same type of DERP moment. I thought I'd do the same but with an anime."

Examples:
PinkiePie.mp4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xAjpcAfCrg
Fluttershy.mp4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS6UaOeFB6w
Or you can go with the exe route:
RainbowDash.exe - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2pWphmhLGk
TwilightSparkle.exe - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUy7Yj4qsRs (this one made me  )

Whaddya think?

I think something like those would walk the very thin line between amusing and extremely irritating.

Also I need an opinion. I've got one clip that's goes like "music, record scratch noise, something bad happens". I have another one that follows the same general theme and I think could also be enhanced by the record scratch noise but was afraid it'd make them too similar or too repetitive. What do you guys think?

The My Little Pony clips basically seem like youtube poops minus the cleverness and effort. It's amusing as a concept here and there. The windows crash made me laugh, I admit, but it's mostly sound-based comedy.

Watch the youtube poops I posted and you'll see what I mean.

The record scratches can work, but without seeing them, I can't tell you if they'd be very similar. Since I don't know the concepts though, you could consider thinking outside the box for one of them and thinking of something else that could interrupt the clip instead. Record scratch is a default, but there are other things that can work. Like T.K getting killed cutting off the music for my last one. You can also have someone getting hit with a funny hit noise. Impact is key for stuff like that, so you can get really creative :D
