Description

Welcome to the Lip Flapper! Each week, we delve deep into the community and get a look into both individual members as well as group discussions on various issues that surround our hobby.
________

This Week in "The Lip Flapper"

This week, I spoke with GuntherAMVs, who is the co-conspirator behind Fate Matrix and who is an very talented up and coming editor.

________

Interview Spotlight

Some of you may not know Gunther yet. If you don't, you should! She's a riot to interview and seems to be really energetic and passionate about AMVs. She's the co-editor behind [url=http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... p?v=184989]Fate Matrix
and has been doing some pretty solid work in the AMV world. She's also done some voice acting for a few things seen around here in General AMV.

________

The Interview

Q: Welcome to the Lip Flapper Gunther! You've just gotten started around here, so how about you let the fine people at home know a little about yourself?

Oh, this is so exciting x3. Well, I’m a girl~ (since the username sometimes confuses people ^^’) and they call me Gunther, or Summer ^_^.. I’ve been editing for a few years now, though I’ve only recently started learning the “technical side” of editing. I am prone to incessant fangirling, squeaking, and procrastinating. Oh, and I love Hayao Miyazaki, as well as Robert Downey Jr. <3… I wish they would do a movie together someday :D

-----

Q: Nice to have you aboard! Let's start with the obvious question and ask about your partnership with Shin-AMV. As we've all seen, Fate Matrix has been winning conventions all over the country and was a major contender in the VCA/JCA awards this year. What was it like working in this collaboration, and care to share any lovely secrets to successful collaboration?

We created a glorious troll-monster xDD. But anyway, Shin and I had known each other for a few months when I proposed the original, less complicated idea. I knew he would help me pull it off much better than if I had tried it alone. I said, “Collab.” And then he said, “AKROSS.” And then we started working ^_^.. Shin’s super laid-back, and I’m all over the place with hyper, so I think we balanced each other out. It was an easy time for me, since Shin handled most of the heavy editing. By mid-December, I was essentially a cheerleader while he worked out all the technical details that made the video particularly enjoyable (like all the text and the multiple screens). For me it was a really fun project—one that I will always be proud of :3.

For advice on collabs, I would say the most important thing is finding someone you can trust and crack jokes with :D. Shin and I worked, but we had a lot of fun bouncing ideas back and forth. Find someone you can talk to and brainstorm with openly, because so many of our best thoughts came from us just chatting back and forth. Also, workout labor divisions ahead of time, so there’s no butthurt later on xD

-----

Q: More recently, you created Disco 4.0 for Level Up with Shin as your partner. How exactly did you come up with the concept for the video, and what made you decide to work on this project?

(Late November 2011--not exact dialogue)
Shin: *looks up from masking in Fate Matrix* Wanna be my novice in Level Up?
Me: *^* YES.
Shin: Okay. *goes back to masking in Fate Matrix*

So then I PM-ed him like a crazy person about ideas. We eventually settled on a really complicated concept I was super fond of. Then I bought Sony Vegas over Christmas, and Shin gave me a crash course. He was super helpful and gave me loads of advice, but my original idea was too hard to finish before the deadline. I had found the Rihanna remix on YouTube a while ago and rediscovered it in mid-January, then edited a little bit of it and sent it over to him at 1 AM.

It started out as more of a trance video, but after some back and forth with betas, it morphed into a dance-AMV. Then Shin pumped my hard-drive full of Idolmaster, and there was no way it WASN’T going to be a dance-AMV xDD. I really liked the song, and have always liked dancing, so I thought it was a fun video to try. I cranked it out in a month, using Shin’s transition style as inspiration for my own. He gave me a lot of nice, HD clips, and taught me how to “Zarx” stuff ^^.. He was really patient with me when it came to technical lessons, since I’m pretty derpy when it comes to stuff like that~ *stares at notes I wrote down when learning how to use MeGUI..* … ^_^’’

-----

Q: Got any new projects you would care to give us some info about? I know that I'm personally looking forward to your future works!

:’D OMG, really? xDD. I feel all honored x3

Well, I’m currently working on a parody-trailer I want to submit to Otakon, involving the newest “Avengers” preview. It sounds kind of cliché and cheesy when I type it out like that, but I’m enjoying myself making people lip-sync to Robert Downey Jr.’s voice, so—… >.>.. xD

Also, I want to submit to BIG Contest. It looks all bright and shiny and stuff <3. I have a concept in mind for that one, but it’s still in the works right now and might not come out how I want. It’s a little similar to Fate Matrix, in a way ^_^.. And it involves Taiga. I will force her to bow before my masking tool >:3

-----

Q: I've noticed a particular fondness for Eureka as backgrounds and avatars? Are you fond of Eureka 7? If so, why? Can we expect to see an AMV with this footage?

Oh, I’m such a poser O_Q.. I totally saw that really trippy movie, but haven’t seen the anime yet *squats in corner of shame* xD.. I initially hated her in the movie, when she was getting kidnapped about a million times—(weak girls annoy me, somehow =_=.. I always want to shout at them, “You have arms! PUNCH someone for a change!”).. Anyway, at the end of the movie she totally redeems herself :D. And then my avatar with her saying “Yey” happened. And then I decorated my online accounts with her. It all happened so quickly, I’m not sure how she became my representative xDD.

I need to watch the anime though, so I can start editing with it. I did an AMV called “Headlocked” with the footage from the movie (it’s on my youtube), but I like the idea of working with the anime in full. It’s so long, though O_Q.. (and at one point Eureka has a hideous buzz-cut *shudder*)

-----

Q: Stepping outside of the world of editing for a bit, I noticed an interesting quote on your YouTube page. "I decided to change my style a little. I want to start "creating," and not just "editing."" What do you mean by this, and is there really a difference between "Creation" and just "Editing" in your opinion?

Ah, well.. *hands on hips*.. I had gotten into the habit of picking a song, picking an anime, and just making it look cool. I realized there was nothing below the surface, and I wanted to start making full AMVs that would leave people with something, like an aftertaste or a lasting effect. I try not to just “edit” anymore. I want all of my videos to mean something to me, and to other people.

So “editing” is something I see as flat and technical, while “creation” is what the editor puts into his or her work. It doesn’t have a really obvious message, or be as blatant as Fate Matrix was about it. Something like Nostromo’s Running Man comes to mind. Pure energy, and you can feel it, even though when you watch it you may be a little unsure of what it means at first. “Creation” is why I watch AMVs. I like that feeling, that burst of emotion or realization you get when you’re watching. It’s wonderful ^_^

-----

Q: You're quite the voice actress in your parts of the CDVV Audio Books and the reviews led by Radical_Yue! What made you get involved in this project, and what was it like working with the CDVV/Yue crew? Do you enjoy voice acting?

Bahahahaha! Making Kireblue sound like AppleJacks was really fun :DD. Illegally fun. I secretly wanted to be a professional voice-actress for a while :3.. I can do all sorts of cool accents~ :nose: :nose: :nose:

I fangirled long enough at Ileia to convince her to speak with me, and then I met the most of the rest of the CDVV team in a voice-chat later on :D.. I’ve always admired their work in the community, so it was pretty surreal to meet them all and even get to voice act with them :D. They’re quite the crowd xD. They enjoyed destroying my innocence xDD

The Yue Crew enjoyed destroying it as well, incidentally. Being fresh in the editor community, having gained notoriety from Fate Matrix, I always feel very surprised and honored when people ask me to participate in new things ^_^.. I had of course heard about Yue from other people, and heard that she could be kind of tough on people when beta-testing, so I was a little nervous to meet her. But she turned out to be super nice and really, really funny xD. Most editors out there seem to be nice people :3

-----

Q: Looking at your prior work (before Fate Matrix and Disco 4.0), you seem to have been a very capable editor from the beginning. Any secrets you might want to share with others on getting a strong start?

xDDD Oh, wow =^^=.. Thank you~ :D

Before I ever started editing, I often made up music videos to songs in my head ( Is this strange? I want to think most creative people, like all of us, still do this~ x3).. The first few videos I did were with anime I loved, with songs I loved, and I think that helped get me off on the right foot. I also spent a lot of time watching my favorite editors’ work, like WhispersxReloaded, Jazzvids, Ileia, and most recently Shin, Cross/fade and Corsair; I still do watch them in order to learn. As I start to get more involved in the community, especially recently, I’ve discovered a LOT of talented people out there. I guess the trick is to learn from them without comparing yourself too much ^_^

-----

Q: Time for a random moment of patriotism! Which is your favorite? :dino: :shark: :bear:

*suddenly in statue of Liberty cosplay* My favorite has to go to the green dinosaur. LOOK AT DOSE GIANT DINO EYES, DAWWWWW~ :dino: :dino: :dino: :dino: :dino: :dino:

-----

Q: Now that we have our audience's attention back, care to let us know what your favorite AMV is and why?

Oro$hi’s “Hello World”—I flipped out of my mind when (SPOILER ALERT—LOOK AWAY) Nekki started singing xD. It really spoke to me, even though it’s all so simple. One of those very special reminders that AMVs can be quite plain, and still speak volumes. And when he started dabbling in the live action? I’ve always really, really loved that idea: transcendence from one world into another. No boundaries. So liberating ^_^…….. <.<.. yeah, I get all sappy when I talk about this AMV xD.

…… does anyone know where Oro$hi is, so I can thank him? ^^’’..

-----

Q: Well, that's all the time we have for today. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions! As a final question, how about you tell the community exactly how you feel about it, or perhaps just a shout-out or two?

Oh, no~! My pleasure ^_^.. Hopefully I didn’t dork-out too badly ^^; xD..

*waves* Hello, Org Community! I really like it here, and while I’m still kind of shy when it comes to meeting all you famous, talented people, I’m totally stoked to be a part of it all. I admit I was very overwhelmed when first arriving here, since it’s all rather fancy and quite spacious, but you’ve all be very, very nice to me ^_^.. The Org and the editing community in general is a very supportive and engaging environment~.. May it forever prosper :3 *Star-Trek salute*

Aw! I loved reading this. Summer is always so sweet and funny, but we don't get to talk much maybe because we keep missing each other on skype (time zone difference ;__;) so with this I got to know her better.

Summer, your reply to the difference of editing and creating was awesome. I feel the same, that's probably why I love your works so much <3

And thanks to Code with always interesting questions :D
