Search enhancement - search by Aspect Ratio or Vert. Res.

Post by pcheintz72 » Sat Apr 14, 2012 9:53 pm

I know the site has a option to search by format (MPEG1, WMV, etc...). Ever consider a search by aspect ratio or search by vertical resolution?

In the case of aspect ratio, the more known ones would include
- 1:1, 23:20, 5:4, 4:3, 11:8, 36:25, 3:2, 14:9, 5:3, 16:9, 37:20, 2:1, 11:5, 12:5
And yes, while some are more obscure than others, I have seen stuff in virtually all of these formats. You could set it so someone searching for this could be looking for 'all at or below' or 'all at or above' the selected ratio... you might want to put the rounded decimal amount next to each aspect ratio "4:3 (1.333)".

In the case of vertical resolution, a good range that includes PAL and NTSC would include:
- 80p, 90p, 108p, 120p, 144p,
- 160p, 180p, 216p, 240p, 288p,
- 320p, 360p, 432p, 480p, 576p,
- 640p, 720p, 768p, 960p, 1080p,
- 1152p
Like aspect ratios, I've seen stuff in virtually all these formats.

1.000 1:1 SVCD standard. Technically, SVCD should go to 4:3, but I've seen a small number of videos use this aspect ratio.
1.150 23:20 MovieTone standard. Technically no longer used, but I've seen a small number of videos use this aspect ratio.
1.250 5:4 European container standard, and 1.222 LCD, and QCIF standard. Technically, all should go to 4:3, but videos use this aspect ratio.
1.333 4:3 VGA, SDTV, 480i, and VHS standard. Still most used standard. Sometimes called 12:9 instead.
1.375 11:8 Academy, and 35mm Full standard.
1.440 36:25 IMAX
1.500 3:2 DVD, VCD, CIF, HVGA, 35mm Still, and VistaVision standard. Technically, DVD/VCD all should go to 4:3/16:9, but videos use this aspect ratio.
1.556 14:9 Commercial standard.
1.667 5:3 WVGA, Super 16mm, and Veriscope standard. Sometimes called 15:9 instead.
1.778 16:9 FWVGA, EDTV, 480p, nHD, and Plasma standard. The most popular new standard.
1.850 37:20 35mm Widescreen. Modern Widescreen has rendered this almost unused anymore.
2.000 18:9 SuperScope, Univisium, and Superfilm standard.
2.200 11:5 70mm, Super Panavision, and Magnafilm standard.
2.400 12:5 35mm Anamorphic, CinemaScope, Panavision, Scope, and Modern Anamorphic standard. Rounded for 2.39. before about 1970 it was 2.35 (47:20).

80p Not a broadcast standard. A low bandwidth standard.
90p Not a broadcast standard. A low bandwidth standard.
108p Not a broadcast standard. A low bandwidth standard.
120p NTSC LCD handheld devices. QQVGA standard.

180p Not a broadcast standard. A low bandwidth standard.
218p Not a broadcast standard. A low bandwidth standard.

This.

I know people who say "I want to watch a Dragon Ball Z video right now!" but I've never known anyone say "I was to watch a 16:9 video right now!"

I mean, even searching by file type I've seen used before. Back in the day when I was working off a craptop, the best I could play were low quality WMVs so I used that function.

you know, it could help to weed out the nooby videos from the better produced ones. like searching DBZ amv in 4:3 and getting out all the wrong aspect ratio videos.

but it seems really unnecessary, at least to me for how much searching i do for videos i haven't seen... (0)

That doesn't mean you won't get DBZ that is supposed to be 16:9 (such as the movies) stretched to 4:3 since it's a combination of the movies + series so it's still a crapshoot.

bad example i guess, how about flcl, that doesn't come in 16:9 anywhere, does it? you will get the occasional 16:9 w/ letterbox but i bet it would do a lot to cut out all the garbage.

that said, it's still not worth it.

There are also multi-anime AMVs, as well as the source aspect ratio isn't necessarily what you might want for your video (aspect ratio has a say in setting the mood for what you're watching as well, believe it or not)
