Ask Brad an After Effects Question!

Post by Brad » Fri Mar 30, 2012 12:07 pm

I've been having some fun lately helping people solve their AE issues and I thought it might be cool to set up a thread where people needing AE help can ask directly, and learn from each other.

If you're trying to figure out how to do something specific in After Effects, ask it here, and I'll either just tell you what you should do, or maybe record a quickie tutorial (like I did over here). Just be sure to provide some kind of example if you're looking to do something specific. If it's more of a general "I'm trying to do <this> but <that> is happening."

So yeah! Hit me up. And if you have an answer to somebody's question before I get around to it, feel free to jump in!

NSFW video warning.

Sorry to use a hentai video as an example (and one that has to be downloaded), but I can’t remember seeing this effect elsewhere. It’s the “vibration” effect is used at 2:13, 2:19, 2:58, and 3:03:

Is there a particular name for that effect, and can it can done in AE? Thanks in advance.

How would i make a cool looking "Universe" or something that resembles space in After Effects. So something like a galaxy (would be cool if it moved too  )
Not trolling here, I really want to know how to make something like that.

Hmmm well, that's a somewhat tall order. Basically you're looking at using a more advanced particle system. And more likely a combination of a lot of different effects. Off the top of my head, I'd say if you literally did want to make a galaxy of stars that had dimension and depth and all that, you'd probably be best off starting with Trapcode Form to create the stars and dust clouds. The reason I'd use Form over Particular in this application is because you don't need to be emitting new particles. You just need the particles to already be there, which Form is built for. Once you've played around with it enough and have gotten your stars, you can then do a 2nd Form pass to make some dust clouds, then add some flares for glowy lights and things like that.

I don't think I'm going to record a tutorial on how to do all this since it'd take way too long, and a lot of it would just be messing around until it looked right. But best of luck to you!

Hey Brad,

I'm new to the community, I would very much like to know what is the best way to make hexagons in AE. I have this SUPER COOL idea for a video involving Naruto and Bleach. Can you please lend a brah a hand.

Regards,

Ryno
