Buying Anime?

Post by sholin360 » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:09 am

Where can you buy subbed anime in Osaka or Kyoto, I went to lots of stores but they're all raw. I heard there was a store called 'Animate', can you buy subbed (maybe dubbed) anime like Darker Than Black, Kuroshitsuji?

Subtitles are very rarely included in japanese releases (even japanese subs), foreign language dubs are even less common.
That said, some series do have eng subs and there are even cases of various dubs.
Some that come to mind:
Clannad BD Box (eng subs)
Kanon BD Box (eng subs)
Howl's Moving Castle BD (various dubs and subs)
But they are the exception rather than the norm. If you want anime with English dub/subs, you'll have to wait FUNimation or whichever other company bought the rights for the series you're interested to (if it's been bought to begin with) to put out their edition. Otherwise, you'll have to stream subbed anime on crunchyroll or failing all cases, resort to fansubs for those few shows that don't have any legal translation.

Yes, Gundam Unicorn does have English dub as well as various subtitle tracks.
Basically, if you want to know whether a certain anime has a dub or sub in its Japanese edition, you should probably check out what its page on CDJapan says. It does list various info, which includes dub and subtitle tracks, so it's a good way to see beforehand if you can just get the Japanese edition or you'll have to wait for the English one.

You're in Japan, what do you expect?

Either way, why would you to buy overpriced dvds/blurays that has so little content?

Hilariously enough, with BRDs being region A in both the US and Japan, it's often cheaper to back-import the American releases because the NA market won't stand for the ludicrous prices that the Japanese market seems okay with.

The whole region A thing is going to be a major factor in the industry going forward.

BDs are also hardly region locked anymore, and even when they have region specified, they tend to have both A and B (with C untested), leaving out only Russia, China, and part of the center/southern Asia. Pic related.

Yeah, I can't really imagine what the DVD will look like if its back-imported from the US to Japan [with subs in their own language?]. Thats like that one episode of Samurai Champloo ALL OVER AGAIN!
Almost as hard as fighting a Holy Paladin.
