At first it was like, oh cool look at what I made. Now its teetering on the obsessive and occupies a lot of my free time. <.< I can't help it though, its fun. :3

AMVs were never a priority to me, or important. It was always a way to kill time. However, I'm having less fun with it now compared to when I was 11 :? I've become more annoyed at myself with this huge block I've had for years, and as a result I now only spend a maximum of maybe 6 total hours on an amv. I hate spending too much time on an amv, I physically can't do it. I've been able to adapt to this change now though and pull out full videos in 3 hours haha. Therefore, I spend less of my free time editing and more of it just doing other stuff, which I don't really mind.
Before, making amvs was my primary hobby, but over the last 6 years I've gotten to the point where I even dislike watching any anime. There are many other things in my life I want to do, and now, especially, is the time to go do them.
However, I've never actually won at a convention before, and I'm hoping to do so before I burn out.

Great responses! Nice to see everyone's input on the matter.

Also, how do you guys think age plays into all of this?

I was 17 in 1999 and had just graduated high school when I started. I was young, but not *young young* like 11 or 12. The flexibility of a college schedule and working part time really allowed me to pump out videos. It took me until 2002 (a decade ago!) to win my first awards and to get involved with the community at the age of 20. Experiencing the appreciation and friendships I've made through this hobby is what kept me going.

When I started getting older, my real life responsibilities increased and was beginning to feel a bit desensitized after doing it for so many years.

However, some people can start this at the age of 30 and have that exciting feeling that everyone gets when they first start, so is age *really* a big factor? Maybe it's not just age, but also life situations.

Thoughts?

Originally, I just thought I would take a break from it and come back to it eventually. That was at the beginning of 2006...I ended up just not having the desire to make anything once work and whatnot got in the way. Plus, I found my interest in watching anime really died around the same time, so no new footage to inspire me really contributed to my lack of interest in the hobby.

From 2002 to 2005, it was a huge part of my life as I tried to get out all the ideas I had flowing in my head and I loved the rush of seeing my AMV shown at a con. I think also not going to cons since 2006 has had alot to do with my waning interest. The comradarie I had with all the other editors was a big part of my inspirational juices. Now that a whole new generation of AMV makers has replaced the old guard and the con groups have changed over, it has made going to cons less of a priority. It would be nice to have an old timers get together someday though.

Maybe AWA 2013 when I start showing the NES and the rest of the VG Projects at cons for their 10 year anniversaries.

I started out when I was around 26-27 and I remember that initial feeling of excitement. I guess once the 30's came and went, the drive waned with it.

AMVs are pretty important to me because I absolutely love making them. I rarely go a month without either releasing a video, or at least uploading something to youtube. And during the summer, I prioritize having a video ready for AWA and NYAF. And I usually send a Disney MEP track to Otakon.

And in terms of watching AMVs, I go the the AMV Announcement forum multiple times every single day. Every year, I need to have about 250+ new AMVs downloaded to show at MomoCon, so I essentially spend all year trying to make that quota.

At my case:

When I was younger, amvs seemed random first, but when the law forbidding anime came, I started to love them, since they were my only conection to the anime. Now in this days even with all the new duties amvs still seem funny for me and a way to relax after the stress. Too bad I only have 3 months left to make all my stuff and then vanish
