Recommended Viewing [A Posing Question to Everyone]

Postby CodeZTM » Fri Jan 06, 2012 3:25 pm

[I was originally going to do a group discussion on this on the Lip Flapper for March, but I thought this is something that I wanted the whole community involved with and not just a small group of editors.]

As some of you might know, Phade made a list of required viewing before making any sort of AMV. But a LOT of videos have been released since then, and I think there's a lot of great additions that this list could have made to it. Plus, I feel like we could diversify our lists into each of the AMV genres.

So, to the a-m-v.org community, I pose this question to you...

What would be your own personal "Required Viewing" for any newcomer that's wanting to start editing, but might want to see how it's done first?

After we've got a good batch of videos that everyone has recommended, I'll update the first post with a list of the most commonly made suggestions and make it as a new "Community Required Viewing" as the thread title, and hopefully be able to help others out in the process. Even with only the most popular recommendations on the first page, we'll still have "x" pages of good videos that will likely be a great tool for anyone who wants to read the rest of the pages.

Plus, this is a great way to share some of the best videos this site has to offer (in one regard or another).

[A Handy List That You Can Copy Paste for Your Recommendation List, as well as a description for each one]

Action
These videos are exciting and filled with adrenaline! It is a roller coaster ride that could involve fighting, flying, or even playing tennis – if this video captivates you and gets your blood pumping, then it is the best action video.

Comedy
-This is the video that has made you laugh the hardest – not just because of the song or anime used, but because of the clever way they are put together.

Fun
-This is a happy, upbeat video that contains very little comedy and dance elements but still leaves an overall good feeling with the viewer.

Dance
-This is an energy-filled video, often containing prominent scenes of characters dancing, that most makes you want to get off your chair and DANCE!

Drama
-This video captures a heavily dramatic event, emotion, or situation and conveys it extremely well.

Fanservice
-These AMVs capture what the fans want. Usually, that means a characters "assets", but can also be references to other series or things just generally pleasing to the audience.

Horror
-These AMVs invite fear and dread into the hearts of the viewers. Were you scared?

MEP
-These AMVs involve multiple editors editing many different songs/tracks/anime together into a cohesive piece. How well these work together is the basis by which to measure these.

Romance
-These vidoes portray a romantic feeling or relationship in the most compelling way. It explores one or many of the faces of love, whether that’s happiness, yearning, devotion, flirtatiousness, nostalgia, heartbreak, or something else.

Lip Sync
-These AMV displays the best quality (NOT quantity) of lip-synch work in a video.

Collaboration
-Several editors working together on one song/AMV creating a piece that's better with two editors than one.

Rap/Hiphop
-These AMVs take a musical genre and emulate it through varying styles of editing.
[Note: I'm adding this one because I honestly feel like it's a genre in an of itself.]

Effects
-These videos utilize visual effects to enhance the overall effectivness of their concept/message, or just for the general enjoyment of others.

Trailer
-These AMVs advertise a specific movie/anime/etc and attempt to get the audience excited about it and view it in the future.

Instrumental
-These AMVs are put together without lyrics and can make just as powerful of a statement.

Sentimental
-Good sentimental videos are more lighthearted than dramatic and lack a prominent romantic theme, but they still compel attention and leave a lasting impression. Sentimental videos tend to explore themes like nostalgia, friendship, adventure, and wonder.

Character Profile
-This AMV is the most effective at capturing the essence of an anime character. It may tell a clear story, or it may consist of fragmented scenes carefully edited together to give us a sense of what the character is about.

Multiple Anime
-This AMV conveys a great story or theme by using two or more anime together. A central concept relates characters and emotions or binds multiple anime worlds into one, creating a video that would not work with one anime alone.

Storytelling
-These AMVs do their best to "tell a story" and entertain us.

Oh yeah, I didn't make that clear. You don't have to use the premade list. You're free to list out videos any your own unique reasoning behind them. I just thought it might be handy for those that want to do recommendations by genre. XD

Do I have to put a single vid for every category or can I put just 1 video for the categories I want?

Either way you want. Or you could just list the videos you want, without any specific genre and explain why you'd recommend them.

Trailer:

Because it will make you want to re-watch Clannad from beginning to end over and over.

Fun:

Because we don't see too many musicals on the org anymore

Collaboration:

Because they show 10 anime every second but somehow manage to transition to each one perfectly

Action:

Because synchronizing actions to a beat never looked so sexy

Instrumental:

Because its so shiny and dynamic

Comedy:

Just trust me on this one.
Almost as hard as fighting a Holy Paladin.

I'm not going to post my reason, the AMVs should speak for themselves. :P

Action:

-OR- (Going strictly by Code's definition) . . . (Sorry Code xD)

"These videos are exciting and filled with adrenaline! It is a roller coaster ride that could involve fighting, flying, or even playing tennis – if this video captivates you and gets your blood pumping, then it is the best action video."

Others (Ones that need to be put on there but not sure which category they belong too) :

Anyway, Since there's so many good/great AMVs too choose from, I was kinda thinking that you can organize the Phade's Required Viewing into folders and organize them into Action with its action AMVs, Drama with its drama AMVs, Storytelling with its storytelling AMVs, so on and so on :P

So is this thread just gonna die because this seems like the one time someone gets to actually post their favorite or honorably mentioned AMV that deserves to be considered for future reference of all time :P

I mean I know that people don't have to post if they don't want too but seriously, I was really curious what all the other editors thought should be an AMV that needs to be studied for future reference :P

I agree with Lloyd, and thanks for the shoutout Reg. That amv is also available on the org for DL:
Even though I consider it one of my favorite amvs that I've made, I consider my School Rumble amv my most powerful romance amv to date. Here's my choices, I have MANY amvs for each category that I find on the same level but I'll just choose one per category.

well, personally, I don't wanna risk embarrassing myself by asserting that something i myself like is a definitive title for a genre.

rap/hip-hop

That DJ Soup video was great
Trial by drownding was excellant

others I'd already seen or not impressed... been meaning to go through my archives lately... maybe sometime soon I actually will ^.^

anyway I rather think the tried and true examples from the old guid are quite good to this day, but as someone also said. I'd totally go another way around this. Maybe I'll get into that later.

Lists so far have seemed just as 2010/2011-centric as Phade's list was 2000/2001 centric. Lets break that out a little more. I'm sticking with vidlinks because this would all be way too cumbersome with vidid. I don't have the time currently to expand this as far as I'd like (having to do a bunch of manual look-ups and all), so I'll drop my abridged list here and come back and touch it up later on.

Yeah if I broke out my archives I'd be going through every year since 1998 :| and many of them didn't even win vca's, so many great videos get overlooked the one year their eligable it's really not a good measure. Also each year tends to have more than a handfull of deserving candidates :/

I just wanted to find that sped up 'Fireflys' (Owl City) AMV... and I've detoured off on a project that could take many days to complete :x lol figures.
