For me I keep finding strong releases left and right from many genres that I should invest some more time into. That Graveyard LP is also great.

Well, this post and it's replies serve as a 2012 Musical Bucket List of sorts for myself. I'm so far behind in music. The only albums I've heard on these pages are "21" by Adele, "Conditions of My Parole" by Puscifer, and "Thank You, Happy Birthday" by Cage the Elephant. I didn't know that Nightwish was even close to finished with their new album. I was also hoping that Deltron Event II would be on this list, but sadly the release has yet to come.

P.S. Lady Gaga? Really? Auto-Tune is a disqualifier for any decent album of the year contest. Especially when the artist can actually sing...

This is really good. Taking a few months (or almost a year, as it's been) for the hype and arguing about it to die down has been good to it.

I really like "Whirring" and should probably hear more of The Joy Formidable, too.

I really let myself slack off majorly last year when it comes to listening to new music. Most of my listening time has been devoted to podcasts. But if I was to pick just one album that consistently brought me back (and it's been mentioned a few times already)...

According to my prediction “Within Temptation - The Unforgiving” was meant to be the album of 2011, because it has some unique music and most of all the lyrics are pretty outstanding.

I'm kind of an Opeth fanboy, so I feel both inclined to disagree and agree with dislike of Heritage. Strangely the album hooked me right away; it felt livelier than Damnation, considerably proggier than anything they'd done, and exceptionally creative. After being hooked on it for a week or so I started to feel like Akerfeldt's singing was a little lackluster and actually the weakest point of the album. That's strange to me because I've always felt the music melded so well with Opeth. Heavy, aggressive passages with death growls, balanced by melodic sections with clean vocals, and occasionally heavy sections with clean vocals. Just a good mixture of sounds. Then Damnation came out, with no distorted guitars or death growls, but just mellow and clean all around. Still a pretty solid album if not really in line with their discography. But Heritage feels a little out of place, like Akerfeldt couldn't use clean singing to power through the more aggressive portions of the album.

I still really like it, though, and would put it in my top 10, but I also haven't fully enjoyed 10 new albums this year, and thus my lack of a list.
