Typical AMV file extensions

Postby Facem@n » Mon Jan 02, 2012 2:22 pm

Hey all,

So I'm the webmaster for Anime Boston, and I'm making a spiffy new submission form for our AMV contest to allow people to upload files directly (no FTP necessary). I'm trying to get a list of common file extensions to allow for upload, since I don't want to allow people to upload just anything.

So far I have:
-asf
-asx
-avi
-flv
-mov
-mp4
-mpg
-rm
-swf
-vob
-wmv
-ogg
-mkv

I'm not incredibly familiar with the AMV creation process, or what you might submit to a convention vs what gets posted on the org. So I would really appreciate it if some of you would be able to give more input on other common file formats of AMVs.

Thanks!

That list should cover most of the submissions. I've seen a few others in my own AMV Contest, like:
- .dv
- .divx
- .mpeg
- .m2t

If you haven't spoken with the person running the amv contest for AB, I'd do that. They're the person who has to deal with all the submitted files, so you might be able to restrict your extension whitelist even further.

I checked with him already, but he wasn't sure himself. Thanks!

I'm fairly sure these two can be safely killed. These are Microsoft's proprietary formats with something old like MS MPEG-4 v2 video compression, right? (Or at least the first one is.) I don't think I've ever seen an AMV actually encoded in these.

Facem@n wrote:-mpg

".mpeg" should probably also be considered.

Facem@n wrote:-rm

Oh god, do people actually still use this?

Facem@n wrote:-swf

There is precedent for people editing AMVs in Flash (Westbrook's "Pimp-vangelion" comes to mind), so keep this one.

Facem@n wrote:-vob

I think people have also used this container before for MPEG-2 AMVs, but I don't know why you would when you could just make an .mpg system file. Somebody enlighten me?

Facem@n wrote:-ogg

I think you mean .ogm here; .ogg is mainly used for audio-only files.

I didn't notice any serious omissions here.

Ew D:

mp4
avi
mpeg/mpg

If you're nice then WMV...but the rest of those? Really?

Received over 200 entries for Nan Desu Kan and not a single person had any problem working with those "restrictions."

Pretty much what Yue just said. If you want to add more, MKV and MOV would be the only obvious ones.

I know everyone like to get their drink on for as long as possible at the prescreening, but it's at, what, 8 or 9 hours already. At some point actually enforcing the restrictions that heavily correlate with shitty submissions that aren't going to get in anyways is a good idea.

Well, it's my job to just make things easy and work. Adam can sort out the invalid submissions on his own. Actually, I think he does that before the prescreening now. But if people aren't bothering him about not being able to upload their video, it's for the better. I guess.

well find the computer you are going to run the contest from, and make sure those containers can play on it I suppose?

I'd honestly not worry about limiting the uploads to file names though. The people that don't know what they're doing just slap an accepted file extension on the end of the file and upload it anyways.

I've received my fair share of MyFirstAMV.wmv.mpg - adam has too.
