video card upgrade needed badly

Post by BasharOfTheAges » Mon Nov 21, 2011 8:57 am

So, I've put off getting a new video card for several years now. Currently still running on a GeForce 7950GT - circa 2006 and while it does its job well, and I really don't game on my system that much, it kinda chugs on just about everything I try out.

I'm currently using this mobo and was thinking about picking up something with CUDA support for CS5. Wasn't sure if it was worth doing or not. Any suggestions?

EDIT - The benchmarks I've seen make it look like the CUDA support is pretty much worthless with CS5. Anyone care to confirm or refute that?

Also of note - I think I'm skirting the edge of stability with a 500W power supply as it is. The spec pages for this old card suggest a 400W minimum, CPU is supposed to be drawing 125W, and I'm running 5 HDDs and a half-dozen case fans from it as well. Sufficient to say, I'm okay with the need to upgrade power supplies at this point too, as it has had random reboot issues in the past.

I have a 550W running my quad-core (95W TDP), HD3870, 4 fans, 4 HDDs and 1 SDD. You may be ok, depending on what card you get...but PSU efficiency starts to take a dive once you surpass about 80% load

For the GPU, how about a GTS 450.

For the PSU, a 650W unit should take care of you. Here are some choices from OCZ, Corsair, and Corsair again.

Any reason to splurge ($190ish after rebate) and go GTX560 over that?

EDIT - beside the free copy of Arkham City it comes with.

Besides the obvious increase in FPS...
-Though I kinda hate using the term, the 560 would be more future-proof.
-It would reduce cpu load on blu-ray playback (provided your media player of choice can take advantage of gpu decoding).
-If you run the GPU client for Folding@Home, you'll get more points.

If you go out and get the occasional PC game like Crysis 2 and have a 1920 x 1200 (or 1080) monitor, then the GTX 560 will serve you better for a bit longer. If you're at 1440 x 900 and don't really play through entire games, then I (personally) couldn't justify the extra $100.

Looking at the benchmarks, I think the 560 is quite a deal. And I do run @ 1080p (on one of my monitors) so that's a benefit. Might have a free copy of Arkham City of gift someone then. XD
