It's a matter of grammar

Postby Fall_Child42 » Thu Oct 13, 2011 6:16 pm

When you are talking about MEPs outloud, how do you pronounce it?

1. An M-E-P (Saying each letter individually)
2. A M-E-P
3. A "mep" Pronouncing it like a word. (it rhymes with pep)
4. A Multi-Editor-Project.

Which one is correct?

This is very important.

Also Pie.

Depends how lazy I am. If I'm really lazy, i'll go with 3, not so lazy, 1, not lazy at all, 4.

the only one that isn't correct is #2. all the others are valid ways to to say it.

But isn't the "An" only reserved for words that start with a vowel?

If you pronounce "M-E-P" as "Em-E-Pee" then it does start with a vowel, phonologically speaking - so technically yes, it's supposed to be "an".

Writing doesn't change phonological rules, and a/an is a purely phonological contrast. Unless you live somewhere where M in an abbreviation/by itself is pronounced as "Meh" or something.

The most correct one is #4. Because it's unambiguous. Everything else is more or less a bastardization/technicalization of the real term for lazy people. Pragmatically though, all of them are 'correct' in usage - cause people actually do commonly speak in abbreviations like that and all are understandable. #2 is least correct because it breaks a phonological rule; #3 is also less correct because it doesn't follow the way abbreviations are normally supposed to be pronounced - but in usage both of those are often actually accepted.

It's just like saying Em Ee Pee. Same reason you'd say an hour and a unicorn.

I don't know about you, but I'd say an hour and a unicorn for entirely different reasons for saying Em Ee Pee.

Depends who I'm talking to.

For someone completely unfamiliar, I make a point of explaining Multi-Editor-Project = M-E-P then repeat Multi-Editor-Project aka "mep"

Thereafter, I simplify to just "mep"
