Screw the rules, they stole my laptop.

So... here's my story. Two months ago, my laptop was stolen (I've just found time to share my story). There were 4 unfinished amv projects in it, and the fact is that... more than a year's hard work went to waste. That laptop was my whole life I can say, and I don't think I have the courage to start all over again... so... yeah. Screw the banner below. Screw reality. C'est la vie.

Also,

How would you feel if your computer was stolen? Just think about all those gigabytes of pron. Just - think - about it. Let me see you here, ladies and gentlemen.

This is why I have anywhere from 2 to 5 backups of everything actually important, and try not to leave them in the same place. :|

If my laptop was stolen it'd suck and force me to spend more time at home and make travel much more inconvenient both in terms of work and entertainment. But I know for a fact that I'd actually lose very little as far as important data, projects etc.

I've had 2 laptops stolen so far. The first one was a POS, at the end of it's life, but I had an xbox controller and my PS2 mouse (you know, the one that came with the PS2 Linux Dev Kit) in the bag at the time. Very annoying. The 2nd one I had stolen right from under my nose when I was at the school. It had my dice, another xbox controller, and as far as data was concerned, some stuff for a BESM campaign I was running that I hadn't backed up anywhere yet.

The first one I was more devastated by the loss of the mouse as it was the only extra USB mouse I had, it was nice and small perfect for mobile use, and it cost me $200 (well, the kit was $200 that it came in.) PC was at the end of it's life.

The 2nd one I was extremely annoyed that it had even been stolen. I had just bought it 2 months back. Lost some BESM info which was sad as well as my dice (I miss them so much) and yet another controller. I filled a police report, got money from insurance to cover the laptop, and bought a model number higher for the same price. In the end it turned out ok, but I was seriously annoyed none-the-less.

As far as data is concerned, I generally keep it backed up. I tend to sync my laptop to my desktop quite often so I don't really need to worry about loosing data from the laptop being stolen. But yeah, I've lost projects before due to other annoyances, such as click of death.... So I feel your pain.

Group hug, everyone.

I remember drinking a couple glasses of wine to calm me down, the days after that... loss. After all... it was a high-end laptop, around 1000 euros, with countless archives, AMVs of mine that i'll never get the chance to see again, photoshopped images (miss them a lot), betas and such... The tragic irony of the story is that I work as a policeman :x

Anyway, a helpful piece of advice.

BACKUPS PEOPLE. BACKUPS.

After all, i realise that i'm neither the first victim, nor the last.

I always thought that if I lost my computer/got it stolen or it broke down, that would be the end of my life. I just seemed so dependent on it. But then I spillt coffee all over my laptop and it died on me and I didn't have another one for like 6 weeks. I gotta say, it felt liberating (though I had saved most of my important things and it was an old laptop, so I didn't quite feel the loss). I started going out more and falling asleep without my computer running, it was really good for my mind :)

My desktop?

I'd call the police for trespassery and burglary.

Eyes never leave the laptop in public. If they do leave the laptop for some specific reason, my hands are on it.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

I remember the week that Windows 7 came out. A friend of my mom gave me her broken laptop to keep, so I replaced the hard drive, upgraded the memory, and bought a copy of Windows 7 for it (cost me about $300). Then somebody broke into my house while I was gone and stole it along with my PS2, camcorder, and probably a bunch of stuff that I still don't even know about. I hope that asshole die of cancer.
