Biggest AMV Annoyances. (Survey) I need your help!

Postby Fall_Child42 » Fri Sep 02, 2011 11:24 am

Dear a-m-v.org community, I need your help.

I am conducting a survey about AMVs. Specifically what makes people dislike any particular AMV. I have created several categories that reflect different parts of editing an AMV. Those categories are as follows:

Visual effects
Style/Genre
Anime or Visual Source
Additional Editing Techniques.

I am eliminating the audio choice from this survey because It is not directly applicable to the information I am trying to gather.

What I would like you to do is list in order your top five reasons of why you might dislike an AMV in each of the four categories. 1 being the biggest annoyance, 5 being the smallest. If you can not think of 5 things put as many down as you can. For your convenience I have created a template for you to use. Please fill it out and either PM me the result or paste it back into this thread. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated.

[Visual Effects]

1. Piano keys

2. Too much noise

3. Random glow

4. Lifting things directly from video copilot

5. Constant shake (possibly combined with the song being all like RRrrraAAaAarRRRarraRARaRRARARRRARARARaararRAarRRRR)

[Style / Genre]

1. Multi-anime drama/sentimental videos with no connection between characters

2. Random effects-fest without structure

3. Non-funny comedy

4. Shallow drama (I TRIED SO HAAAAAAAAAARD AND GOT SO FAAAAAAAAR)

5. I wanna be Nostromo

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Shameless ShinKAI abuse (crying girls + pretty clouds coming soon to the theater near you)

2. Poorly-ripped old anime (DBZ etc.)

3. Too much fanservice

4. Not enough fanservice

5. Too many sources in general

[Additional Grievances]

1. Not enough structure

2. Editors obsessed with characters just putting random scenes of said characters to make an AMV

3. Long fight scenes from [insert shounen anime] as concept for videos

4. A lot of flashing

5. Stock transitions/effects/stuff in general

[Visual Effects]

1. Fading at every cut, especially hard beats

2. Every video copilot template inserted and modified

3. Piano keys

4. Scenes matted into fancy lines and shapes just because

5. 1 gazillion multi monitor scenes playing in one shot just because

[Style / Genre]

1. Weird Al comedy videos. I love Weird Al, but I hate amvs set to his songs (except for Senshi on Springer)

2. blipvert videos that sync to Family Guy audio

3. lip sync for the hell of it comedy videos and when it's done terrible

4. Super obvious lyric sync punchline comedy videos I can see coming a mile away

5. 3 and 4 being used, but for action and drama

[Anime / Visual Source]

Note: I don't have anything against sources themselves, so I'll just list my visual grievances

1. Didn't deinterlace, making the video look like it's underwater

2. Field order problems because nobody's used the ghosting filter since 2001

3. Resizing a video in video and the dvd overscan lines were not clipped out

4. Macroblocked and muddy fansubs sources from 2005 and before

5. Not cropping the dvd overscan lines in the distribution xvid/mp4/mpeg1 copy (You should keep them in an mpeg2 master for contests as they crop your video on screen)

[Additional Grievances]

1. Timing every beat just for the sake of it and sacrificing coherence

2. White strobing on drumrolls (MY EYES! :x )

3. Fast white flashes

4. Trying to cover up lip flap with a photoshoped matte and not realizing that most non-digital anime from the past has film shaking

5. Obviously forced lip sync

[Visual Effects]

1. Shaking. Oh dear Lord.... Stop the shaking I want to get off.

2. Anything SO grungy to the point where I cannot make out the original anime or it is hard to watch the AMV. Some grunge can be ok though.

3. Poor masking. If you can't make it perfect, at least add a little glow around them or something!

4. Inverted colors or re-coloring that looks tacky.

5. Does a star wipe count here?

[Style / Genre]

1. Conceptually-lacking videos*

2. I personally hate Hentai videos, because a majority of them are just poorly made, in TERRIBLE taste and are all about the sex scenes or shock factors, without any consideration to the music or how to sync them. In the few instances where I was required to review them for a contest or as a beta tester, I have seen one video that wasn't terrible.

3. In the same instance as #2, videos that have overly-dramatic gore-fest crap are generally just horribly made and all about the shock value of limbs flying around. Although not as prevalent as #2.

4. Lip sync that has no point in being there.

5. Videos with over-complicated storytelling/concepts that require a master's degree in English and Philosophy to understand every slight nuance. At the same time, videos with over-complicated effects that have no real need in being there.

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Logos/Watermarks [From the TV to fansubs to self made to any of the above]

2. Subtitles [These can be EASILY cropped.]

3. Extremely poor visual quality [By this, I mean it's almost unwatchable.]

4. Extremely huge video sizes. 720P is just ridiculous for online distribution of an AMV. I would understand anime for rental/download, but AMVs? Bleh. [And I don't care if you have a HDTV as a monitor. :P ]

5. I want to put "Shinkai" here, but let me clarify a little. "Uncreative and Obviously done 1000 times over with no original conceptuality behind it Shinkai"

[Additional Grievances]

1. Not every AMV HAS to have beat sync. >_>

2. Black fades without a point.

3. Editors that watermark their AMVs. >:|

4. Bad font choices/effects.

5. Laziness. Putting credits over the last 30 seconds of a song? SHAAAAAME. >:|

*By conceptually lacking, I mean videos that don't have a clear definition of what they're supposed to be. If Sparky wanted to make a dance-genre amv, then a conceptually lacking AMV would be Sparky's AMV if he had random fight scenes to a dance/techno song, that had little to nothing to do with dancing.

[Visual Effects]

1. Hue cycle, 'nuff said

2. Wipes of any sort (heart, iris, clock, barn door, diagonal, etc...)

3. Slowing down or speeding up footage to the point where it is obvious

4. Overlays (full screen with something like 50% opacity)

5. Complete disowning of fades

[Style / Genre]

1. Yaoi

2. Seizure-inducing white flashes to "sync" to fast/metal music

3. Random effects-fest without structure (stolen from Oto cuz it's a good way to put it)

4. Romance (most of the time)

5. Cuts so fast that you can't tell what's happening

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. NaruBleachBallZ

2. Very poor visual quality

3. Subtitles/Logos

4. Non-deinterlaced (or IVTC'd) footage

5. The Shinkai Sunburst (not including Jaddzia's Tunaburst)

[Additional Grievances]

1. Cutting/fading without syncing to anything, and orphan frames

2. Literal lyric sync*

3. No/very little movement in clips

4. No/weak concept

5. Pointless lip sync (excluding lip sync done ironically)

*ie. finding clips of what you hear in the lyrics. Do not confuse with rhythmic lyric sync

[Visual Effects]

1. Depends on the usage? Star-wipes only amuse me.

2. Effects that don’t add anything to the video, but rather take away from it. Unless they’re used ironically. I am guilty of this both ways.

[Style / Genre]

1. Boring videos.

2. Nostromo’s videos since 2007.

3. Videos that use overly obvious lyric sync that are not using it in an ironic manner. Anyone can sync a door closing to a lyric about a door. But on the other hand, this also makes me laugh, so I’m not sure how annoying it really is.

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Nothing. People are free to use what they will. A good video is a good video.

[Additional Grievances]

1. Creators who take themselves far too seriously. Like Serv0.

[Visual Effects]

1. Badly mixed graphics

2. Poor Text implementation

3. Terrible Color Correction

4. Andrew Kramer Copy Paste

5. Poorly mixed effects ( Flashing with particles at the same time AND a camera wiggle for example)

[Style / Genre]

1. This can be summed into 1 Category for me. I like all styles or genre's as long as it makes since. A drama with no Drama is pointless. A Comedy with no punchline is a waste of time. Just make sure there is some kind of point please. If its just it matches the song that's fine; that is in essence a point just highlight that bro.

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Bad Ar

2. Interlacing....for the love of all the is holy dat interlacing

3. Using only the OP of every anime ever ( unless you cut them into one single scene its kinda just okay so you can use an op...)

4. Poorly Animated shows.

[Additional Grievances]

1. Being Nostromo means make yo shit clean not jumpy so cut better :/

2. If its bad admit it don't defend it

3. Seizure Inducing flashes be fine so long as thats not the whole video...please my eyes can only bleed once.

4. Action should be actiony more explosions less standing and srs.

5. More starwipes!!

[Visual Effects]

1. Rainbow/chroma filter in WMM. Specifically the WMM one.

2. Making your entire video a single color/few colors. The first few times I've seen this, it was done by Harry Potter editors so that they could cover their bad downloaded footage quality (I'm talking about "camera pointed at a theater screen" quality). A lot of people think it's artistic, I think its boring. It makes your video boring to look at when you restrict it to only a few colors (or less). Using this sparingly and at the right time and it can work, but not when you make your entire video this.

3. Camera shake abuse. (Also widely abused on LBP2.)

4. Weird text placement. Emphasizing random lyrics with text sometimes comes off odd to me. Emphasizing the lyrics of your entire song (as in the words flying around the screen) is just annoying. Subtitling your song, not so much.

5. "Magic wand" masking or just really bad masking in general.

[Style / Genre]

1. Lack of emotional sync. (Literal lyric sync/cheesy in a drama, unfunny comedy, boring action.)

2. Videos that are over cut synced. Where I can't tell what is going on.

3. Over use of Black/White flashes to create "action" especially when viewing at a convention.

4. Videos that seem to lack passion for the sources, and just exist to impress people with "art".

5.

[Anime / Visual Source]
Like a few others, I don't usually mind the shows, so I'll put the visual issues instead.

1. Watermarks. I hate them more if they are self made. Subtitles from fansubs also goes in this category for the same reason, they are distracting and ugly if they cover a chunk of your video most of, or the entire time.

2. Wrong aspect ratio - makes me want to re-encode your video (if it's good) just so I can have a copy I don't have to force fix in VLC or whatever.

3. Interlacing.

4. Macroblocking.

5.

[Additional Grievances]
A lot of my "additional grievances" would come from bad audio - either songs I don't like or extremely down-sampled quality.

[Visual Effects]

1. Videos where there are so many effects that you can't make out the actual footage, or videos that turn into "Look what effects I can do" rather than focusing on the anime.

2. Lyrics on the screen. Subtitles for the song or to emphasize certain lyrics are fine, but when the whole video the lyrics of the song in front of everything, then we have a problem. Youtube is really bad with this.

3. Blended frames, especially if it's fix-able.

4. Bad masking

5. Static pictures as an overlay - can soooometimes be done well, but seeing some pretty flower symbols over the whole vid that don't move is distracting.

[Style / Genre]

1. Comedy videos that rely on fanservice/innuendo for their humor.

2. Videos with no/little sense of flow and sync.

3. Scenes sped up so much you can't clearly see them.

4. "It's funny because they are/aren't gay" - at least when that's all there is too the concept.

5. Shaking screens that look corny - it can be done well!

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Multi-anime videos where the anime amounts are uneven - for example, a video that uses two scenes of Yugioh in the whole thing, but uses many scenes of Digimon [Unless it's intentional, like for a comedy video or reference].

2. Multi-anime vid where only the OP or a small amount of eps are used for a certain series, while others have much more variety.

3. Fansubs and logos [Including editor logos]

4. Audio that is used from the Japanese version of the show without a translation - the effect is wasted if I don't know what's being said :x

5. Hellsing :|

[Additional Grievances]

1. Covering lipflaps with a still frame while the rest of the scene is shaking.

2. When the sides of different scenes keep changing so black bars keep appearing and disappearing and your eye can't help but be drawn to them and oooh my goodness...

3. Wasted concepts - the anime and song are a great fit, but the execution is poor.

4. Videos that jump around the anime's timeline too much for no reason.

5. Videos that don't even bother to lipsync and just throw the talking character over the lyric and decide "Look, he's singing!"[/b]

Im sure half of those are in the wrong category...[/quote]

[Visual Effects]

1. Random twitch/wiggle in any clip property (meaning not just camera shakes, but also random luma flashes and so on)

2. Other video copilot presets made for no reason whatsoever

3. BAD text usage (if proper, I enjoy it a lot)

4. Noise abuse

5. Bad or meaningless masks/cookie cutters

[Style / Genre]

1. Trailer

2. Random Opening spam

3. Comedy done wrong (if it's not funny it's just absolutely terrible)

4. Fade abuse editing (using fades is not bad in and off itself, but the abuse, well... a cut is much better)

5. Lip sync videos

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Naruto/Bleach/One Piece/Fairy Tail/Dragon Ball/Shinkai stuff/Other abused shows (but only if used in the same-old videos, they are fine if used in some original way)

2. Interlacing.

3. Non-custom subtitles (ie, not made by the user).

4. Logos. Whether TV logos or user logos. Unless they serve a specific purpose in the video (ie: you made a custom tv showing something so you added a logo for the tv or something like that)

5. Wrong AR. (after this would come all the other various visual artefacts)

[Additional Grievances]

1. Using whatever source without crediting. When using the anime you are using, you state the name of the anime and that's fine, same for the song. Should do the same for the rest of things too. You used some other thing that isn't an anime? Add it to the catalog as non-anime. You used some raster or preset or even a bit off another AMV? Admit it in the comments. This is remix culture, there's nothing wrong in using other stuff in your works, but at least give credit where it is due.

2. Not admitting obvious mistakes being pointed out (smaller stuff could be hard to notice so perhaps could be forgiven if the editor isn't able to see it being there despite it being pointed out)

3. It really annoys me when the audio cut is not done properly. Nothing wrong with cutting the song down if it's too long for the video you want to do or whatever, but at least do it right! It's not even hard...

4. "YouTube" betas. I don't dislike betas, I mean, they serve a purpose. But that's only for actual betas. On YouTube, kids do 5 sec clips at random, list them as betas and be done with the video. That's not really something you can call an AMV. And yet they think editing AMVs is about that. Seriously, that's the cancer killing AMVs. An AMV has a start and an end, it's not some random secs slapped together without any contest and published. That's just an unfinished AMV... if you don't have the intention to finish it when you start it, don't start it at all. Wait for a better idea or something, but just doing a few secs like that is lame.

5. People trying to spam their videos here without adding them to the catalog first. Read the rules, guys! >_<

[Visual Effects]

1. If I notice that the effect you used is an effect. More on this, essentially, the effect used should be to enhance the video and not the point of the video. If used properly as an enhancement then I shouldn't notice the effect as it would be blended with the source in some way.

2.

3.

4.

5.

[Style / Genre]

1. Effects Whores

2. Random clips + music = video

3. Lack of Story, Theme, Mood, Concept, ect.

4. Romance

5. Drama done poorly

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Interpolated frames. Essentially smoothing out everything in order to obtain a 'true' 60/120/+ source off of 24p material. It just doesn't look right. It could partially be due to me being somewhat partial to the cadence of film, but often the technology used makes for some really odd looking in-between frames such as jelly foot.

2.

3.

4.

5.

[Additional Grievances]
*My additional problems are generally audio related as if I can't get into the song I rarely have the will to really watch/enjoy the video*

Interesting thread.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Creator Name: qyll
Date Completed: 9/4/11

[Visual Effects]

1. Above all, effects for the sake of effects.

2. After that, laziness (by that, I mean excessively using stock effects).

3. Weird color effects and hue cycling.

4. Badly placed masks, especially single frame masks as an emblem of the creator's lack of effort.

5. Random superimposed text in the middle of an AMV.

[Style / Genre]

1. Obvious lack of mood/beat sync.

2. Cross ... fading ... EVERYTHING.

3. Speaking from a personal preference, hentai/fanservice videos.

4. AMVs that more or less ignore the style/presence of the audio source.

5. Bad anything is bad, but especially bad drama.

[Anime / Visual Source]

1. Subtitles.

2. Terrible visual quality (macroblocking, interlacing, I mean, hell, people even use GIFs in AMVs. GIFs!).

3. Watermarks.

4. WMM intros.

5. Overused sources automatically turn me off from the video (this includes Naruto, DBZ, Bleach). You're going to work hard to get my attention back.

[Additional Grievances]

1. Lip flap.

2. Directly ripping off parts of other peoples' AMVs.

3. Rampant lack of spatial interpolation. I implore every AMV maker to at least learn how to use this brilliant feature.

4. Orphan frames.

5. Excessive flashing.
