That's more or less a concept.

I believe that having the structure that a concept can bring helps in making amvs feel more polished/better executed.

Well, I don't understand why something needs a concept if hardly anyone looks for a concept. Its something we aren't born with. Most people are Illiterate and aren't that great with finding the concept of anything.

Think of it like this...
Two people are building a chair. They both have the same amount of wood, same tools, etc..., and they both are reasonably skilled handymen.
One person has instructions, and the other doesn't.
More times than not, the chair from the guy with instructions is going to look better than the chair from the guy without instructions...and the guy with the instructions is probably going to get the chair done faster as well (or have more time to add embellishments).

It doesn't really matter if Joe Schmo looking at the chair can understand the instructions or not, the chair made by the guy with instructions will still look nicer. At the same time, a master chairsmith will be able to look at the instructions, look at the chair, and be able to see why the instructions make the chair look nicer and how the sequence of steps used in its construction contribute to its various chair-like features

I must say I am somewhat shocked by the many admissions of Photoshop fear. Is my pen tool guide scaring people more than it's helping? Do I need to publish my entire masking in Photoshop tutorial...or would that make it worse? Help me, HELP you. HELP me, help you! *waves arms like Tom Cruise* Help ME, help YOU!

On to my AMV Flaws! Because we all love to talk about ourselves...
I SUCK AT EDITING. Who spends 30 hours fussing with 1.3 seconds of footage? A BAD EDITOR. Who spends 100 hours on a excruciatingly simplistic 2-minute AMV with NO special effects and STILL messes up the AR?! A REALLY BAD EDITOR! Who spends 42 hours on a plain old 30-second AMV Hell clip that doesn't come out right? A HORRIFICALLY BAD EDITOR!! Who has almost more success complaining about how bad they are at editing than actually creating AMVs? That would be me.

Seriously, though, I can't think I any flaws I haven't already bemoaned 50 times over in my journal. That would be a big flaw in itself, but it's not like it's a big secret or something. :|

Concept is vital, what constitutes a good concept is up for debate. Is an "effects showcase" a concept? If so, does it trump the concepts of "revenge" or "self-sacrifice?" How about this: two people are building a set of stairs. One person actually knows and cares about where the stairs will lead to and from and plans to install them accordingly, the other person just wants to build a generic set of solid stairs to prove that they can. Yeah, both sets of stairs start out low and end up high, but only one of them actually GOES somewhere and serves a purpose beyond its mere constructed existence.

Speaking of all the chair and stair building.

Most of the time I DONT HAVE A PLAN! O.o but I still try to edit the ending first if I can O.o I just go with my gut, maybe that's why my videos "suck"

If you know how it should end, then you have a concept. "Concept" doesn't mean that you should have the whole video planned to the core, that's something completely different ^^;;;

And your videos don't suck, don't bash yourself ;x

I recognized some of the already mentioned flaws but I think my biggest flaw is the following one:
DriftRoot wrote:Who spends 30 hours fussing with 1.3 seconds of footage? A BAD EDITOR.

some other flaws:
- bad or no concepts at all.
- knowing I could make some specific effects easy but still doing it the harder / more time consuming way.
- getting distracted too easily (that's why I'm now here and not working on my AMV...)

[/thread]

@DriftRoot:
actually, your guide helped me a lot ^.^

How do I built stairs?

Aww thanks, and I was being a bit sarcastic with that comment ;)

I usually have a mood I know I want to go for, a style I want to attempt, or something in mind before I start, but someone with "instructions" has every little detail planned out. Usually I know where I'm going, I just don't have a plan on how to get there. Beta testing can really open you up to what kind of feedback you will hear, and give you a chance to change some things that might not have worked previously.

Besides I never said I didn't have concepts. Having a concept and having a plan are two different things. It seems to me that the "building things" analogy is more about having a plan rather than having a concept. At least that's how I see it. :)

Concepts don't have to be elaborate effects created visuals, they can be something simple like mood sync, lyric sync, or beat sync. I think some people arguing about weather or not they have concepts, don't get that.

I heard a pretty nice quote which goes something like this: "Actually getting the message of a work of art is like being informed about public welfare cuts". At least if you have a slight leaning towards the left you should get the point :P One could say the same about AMV concepts :up:

Since when does making a chair the same thing as making an AMV? Give a good example. You also don't need instructions to make an amv. If you used instructions, then how would the AMVS be different then another? they really wouldn't be. One would just have different animes and songs than the other, used in a different program. Its not the right way. Since when did a concept have anything to do with an AMV? People may rate you down because your amv sucked. Even if your concept was great, your amv may have sucked because the clips weren't going with the song. It just doesn't make sense to have a concept if its just the name engravement on the chair. Especially if the chair is made poorly.
I generally believe that, everything else equal, a video made with a concept in mind will be more entertaining than a video without a concept.

So an entertaining video can be something made completely effortless that was made just to have a concept? Wth. Real music videos are made without concept. Normally people have a special idea in mind.(No concept) Sometimes they actually go with the song. Why should AMV making be any different? Its not like people want to read your huge long description on what you wanted to do with the concept that everyone probably wouldn't understand. The main point of an AMV is to have entertainment, otherwise, someone can't even watch it. A concept isn't very easy to draw out of things like videos. Therefore, concepts are completely and utterly useless. I don't watch amvs to do homework(like reading a book) and to find concepts. I watch them for their creativity. And you know what? Its not very creative to have a concept you just pulled out of your brain for no reason, and form something boring out of it. A concept can make an amv great. But what I'm trying to say is, there are many great amvs that just got popular because they matched the lyrics and the beat syncs. For example: the This is Halloween amv.
