I think you misunderstand the point of the simple ballot, the point is the audience picks the one they want to win, not "how to rate" each video. Sure in a way it's flawed, but they don't have to "think of how they want to rate each video." It's simple for the audience to go "I liked this one" and simple to count as you just tally up the votes. Sure it's not "as accurate" but it does make life easier for both parties.

The "watching the whole contest" part isn't the ridiculous part, it's the "putting a number next to every single video" part. Sure, your categories might be twice as large as what most cons have, but there's half as many of them. ~30 videos is pretty standard, and most cons manage to get enough votes to feel like the people spoke (or are good enough at hiding the voting irregularities that nobody notices).

Yeah, I thought the system was unwieldy when I was voting, and that it took more fun out of watching the contest than it was worth.
~But if there's just not going to be any more people's choice, okiedokie. =x

To be honest, the process worked fine the past two times for the contest, mostly because it wasn't that many video's. I could do just a reaction vote like other con's, but then again thats not perfect assessment on which video got the best reaction. I was just trying to keep things fair and balanced by giving each video its own opportunity to be voiced by someone who liked it or not. Its also not like I blaze through the videos too, I normally have a 2-5 second pause between each video for people to catch their breath and write down a respectable score for your video. I also considered our process much more accurate than other cons giving us a bit more of advantage in our results.

The decision to get rid of audience voting entirely seems a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water though.

It's not really just that one issue, it's also scheduling. Next year SJ will more than likley reach or pass 10k attendees and they need more time on the shedule. I would love to keep the AMV prelems, but for it to take up 3hrs really causes pain for the events coordinator. I'll talk with him and see if we can move the prelems to a smaller room and it could also help keep things in control as well.

Do they not realize most cons' AMV contests last that long? 3 hours is pretty standard.

True, but that's usually for the premiere Saturday showing. I'm talking about Fridays amv prelems.

I don't want to argue for or against audience voting, or about how you run the contest, but I figured I comment so it's not just a argument between two forum members about the audience voting issue. Honestly, you are running it in a very inconvenient way and that is causing the problems. There is a reason why most contests operate the way they do.

Also, I would like to say I don't think your system any "more accurate" than any other contest. I personally can't give a "honest rating" to a video after one viewing. I also find some not well done videos to be charming and deserving of a win, but the production quality keeps it from being anywhere close to a 10.

With all that said, I do appreciate the hard work you put into running the contest in a unique way. It is always refreshing to see contests run in a way that isn't the same cookie cutter formula ;)!

We must do things weird up here in the North East. All our cons show the contest twice, both showings are 3 hours, and Friday is the main event. :amv:

Hey, any feedback is always welcomed, without ya'll guys there wouldn't be an AMV contest. I guess I'm more competition orientated since I grew up loving and actually drag racing at the local track, so that would explain why everyone gets their shot for a vote. Its also a reason why I have it in almost the same format, Friday-Saturday Qualifying=Editors Choice, Sunday Eliminations=Friday AMV Prelems, Final Round=Saturday AMV Finals. ;P

You could still achieve the same thing with a "traditional ballot" instead of the rating thing. You have to keep in mind, most people don't care to think much deeper than "I liked this one" and they pick that one. I think your problem comes in as it's more "work" than "fun" for the audience, and they are simply there to "enjoy" without having to think too hard about it. I think all of us at one time or another have gone to something to simply veg out and enjoy, and some "voting" or other part of it is all intense and the reaction is "screw that, too much work."

This is one of the things I see that could be troublesome if I used a Ballot type system, using a ballot system is easy only for a few amv's at a time, its much easier for one to remember up to maybe 3-5 amv's and for them to choose which one of those was the best. However when you got upwards of about 12 amv's per-category you tend to forget which amv was in what order and mark it down as the best. Some people could remember and mark it down, while others will just tend to forget about it. Yes, I can have a title on the amv saying which amv order its in, but then that's more work for me to do in less in a weeks time. (Remember, I'm not just in charge of the AMV contest anymore) I could, in theory make a online people voting, but I would have to push the deadline much earlier (instead of a week before the con, it would have to be two weeks before the con) to give at least a weeks time for people to vote on the AMV's and have them ready for saturday's showing.
