Separate Music and Speech?

Post by xJellyBean » Sat Jul 30, 2011 8:43 am

Hello, I have one fairly ambiguous question.
How are amv makers able to separate speech from background music when they are using speech only in an amv; along with their own music of choice.
eg. 0:00-0:22 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VTZy5AL4dU
You can only hear the speech but no background music.

Or is there a way to lower/get rid of the background music? How is he doing it?

Thanks for any help.

Most multi-channel audio will have dialog in the center channel of a 5.1 (or more speakers) audio stream. Just extract the 5.1 (or 7.1) audio from the dvd and split it into it's different channels.

If you're dealing with stereo, however, things are a bit more tricky. It'd come down to using a program like audacity and trying to find a vocal isolation plugin (or messing around with bandpass filtering)

It's also worth mentioning, aside from the technical aspects, as a video element, it's cheesy as all hell and a lot of contests won't allow it for legal reasons.

This. It really depends on what your concept is. I've added vocals to my videos before, but only in the beginning or end to set a mood or show some kind of emotion. Randomly placing it in the middle of the video may or may not be all that good.

And strangest of all, it's a very prominent feature in other vidding communities.
