I know this all too well. Sometimes pride can be our downfall. :(

Suppose I should finally get around to this. I'm not a very interesting person, and so I've had to think to figure out ten vaguely interesting facts about me.

1. I have a speech impediment, that being stuttering. It's the worst when I'm nervous, excited, happy, or angry, and as a result, I have trained myself to keep calm, level, and deadpan as much as possible. I have also developed a love of writing, even if it's just to talk about mundane things, because it lets me speak without a voice.

2. Oddly, I decided to be a translator. I actually would have preferred linguistics in terms of researching the origins, movement, and development of languages, but there's really no money in that career, and so I went for something marketable. My major is Spanish, my minor is French, and I took Japanese for a year (and would continue had I more time). On a good day, you might actually catch me speaking one of them.

3. I have never had a party or celebration for anything in my life, nor have I ever been on a vacation. |:>

4. Some people would disagree with the last statement, because they would say that doing a semester abroad in Spain was a vacation. Fact: it wasn't. It was schooling that I had to do well on for my major. Amazing fun and culturally enriching? Absolutely. A vacation? Not even close.

5. The last time I drank was in August, and the next time I will drink will be this month (no, not for my birthday or ACen; something else). Intervals of this length are pretty normal for me. I'm not social at all and have little interest in alcohol otherwise.

6. Despite having my driver's license since the usual 15.5/16-year-old range (that's "usual" for Americans, I mean), I have only driven, at most, two dozen times. (I will be twenty four years old this month.)

7. Bakadeshi was my idol back in the day. I told him once that I would only ask for his opinion on my work when I felt as if I had edited something that was worth it. I still have not collected on this.

8. I am a complete geek with videogames. If there is a special boss to be beaten, I will beat it. If there's a glitch to be abused, I will abuse it. If there's a super secret ultra hyper rare item drop to be obtained, I will obtain it. I often say that if schoolwork could be put into the form of a videogame, I would have graduated valedictorian.

9. I decided my major for college in the most logical way I could think to do it. I made two lists: one of things I liked, and one of things for which I had talent. I eliminated all of my items for which I had skill, but no interest (who wants to spend the rest of their life doing something they hate?). I got rid of many of the items which I liked, but wasn't particularly skilled. This left me mostly with things I enjoyed and had talent to do. Biology, psychology, art, music, English, creative writing, and Spanish were the final choices. Bio was gone because of needing too much math. Psych would have become too frustrating with its many gray areas. Art and music were crossed off because I'm not talented enough to make a living and I didn't want to be a teacher. Creative writing was eliminated because it's too difficult to make a living if you are not massively talented or you don't produce what's in vogue. This left English and Spanish. I have spoken English all my life, and therefore decided it was too boring to be my major - hence, Spanish.

10. This will be somewhat controversial, I'm sure, but I am not against suicide - at least for reasons NOT having to do with depression. I believe that since I was not given a choice whether or not I wanted to be born into this world (a selfish act on my parents' part, technically) that it should be my choice whether or not I want to leave it (also selfish, but a fair response). However, this decision can only be made through logic, not blind emotions. To this end, I have a list of questions that I periodically ask myself. (It's a long list, so I'll omit them here.) If ever the answer to all of them is "no, and it isn't a possibility," then that would be the day when I would decide whether or not to continue living. When I say this to people, the first response I get is, "so what about so-and-so? Would you tell them to commit suicide?" My answer is that my criteria for making this decision is going to be different from everyone else's criteria. I would never be so arrogant as to say that I can decide who gets to live and die, because everyone's reason for doing so differs.

Not the most cheery note to end on, but it was interesting at least.

1. I've enjoyed reading this thread.

2. I neither approve of the 2 party system of government dominating the US, nor the 2 gender construct dominating most languages/culture. Not sure which is more outdated and stupid, but I'd say the former is more obviously so.

3. I read. A lot. It can be a bad habit. When I had a tooth infection I read 9 books in 5 days, and my eyes were insanely sore, but I still couldn't stop for long.

4. I'm not feeling overly brave about confessing anything overly deviant...

5. I wrote my senior thesis on self-mutilation. The super-abridged version: Cutting is a coping mechanism, and not inherently "sick."

6. Earlier today I decided Summer Wars is like Anna Karenina, but I doubt anyone wants to hear me expound on that.

7. I have/had a partially paralyzed vocal chord. For the worst of it I sounded like 2 electronic frogs just slightly out of sync. I wish I had recorded it.

8. "Warlike Swans" comes from the movie Stiff Upper Lips in which there is a conversation in Latin that gets mangled by an idiot.

9. The first movie to scare me as a kid was entitled "Football Funnies." I could sit through horror films and just get frustrated at idiot characters, but seeing balloons at a football stadium turn normal football fans into the gross, body painted, rabid variety of fan gave me nightmares.

10. I never watch network TV of my own accord, I mooch off other people's ability to remember schedules or do something else.

11. I wanted my list to go past 10.

12. I too like My Little Ponies... I had the bed-tent as a child. Good times.

More facts, since everybody's doing it

Back in third grade, during show and tell, I once punched a kid in the nuts for giving me bunny ears, then continued talking about what I had to show. The teacher wasn't in the room at the time, and I don't remember if I ever got in trouble for it or not (but I did warn him I'd do it if he did it again).

My golden birthday was on a Friday (Friday the 13th, to be exact) and I ran into a bike rack in a dark parking lot while out egging houses.

Once Mario Party came out, my friends and I played it for at least eight hours straight, and I have a scar on my thumb to prove it.

Unless I'm really focused on something else, I try not to step on cracks on sidewalks and floors, unless the tiles are too small to avoid stepping on the cracks.

I'm actually a really good cook and baker, but I don't like cooking and baking since I don't really like cleaning up afterwards.

I still haven't beaten Silent Hill Origins or Resident Evil 2 (or even played them for more than an hour) since I got them.

I've lived in both small towns and large cities (small town as in a population of about 350 and the largest city in AK, which has a population of about 28,000) and I prefer to live in the bigger cities.

I went hunting and fishing growing up, which is actually something I enjoy, despite my preferences for living in the big city (which you can still do, but it's not as easy as in the smaller towns).

Unless it's recommended from a friend/family member, or if it's a sequel for something I enjoyed in the past, I tend to watch movies/shows/animu etc. and play games with no expectations from the start. Also, unless it's something I really look forward to, I tend to be late in the game for new movies/games/music etc.

I tend to be really good at games that involves skills and chance until currency is involved, which then I become pretty terrible at them.

11. I'm here instead of "taking a bath" or "going to bed" like I said I was gonna do. Don't tell my husband O: (I just got caught XD)

12. I can't stand to have my hair in my face, which is why I always put it up in a pony tail or something. I'm considering cutting it all off (pixy style?) just to see how it would look. It's currently an A-line.

13. I have a horrible addiction to Pokemon Cards. I think it's a bad habit and possibly a waste of money as I don't play the game, nor have any desire to learn how to. I just want to "collect them all." @_@ I'm also on some kind of Pokemon egg site which might just be as big of a waste of time, but it gives me something to do.

14. In high school I got an award for Pottery even though I contributed to the Drama program more. I was rather disappointed and pissed off. :(

15. I still have a can of Bumblebee tuna that my mother in law gave me for Christmas several years ago. It's on my desk.

16. I don't like giving my nieces and nephews presents because they destroy everything they get their hands on, but I feel obligated when their birthdays come up.

17. I am easily spook-able. It's easy to sneak up behind me and "psst" or something and it will scare me. This is due to the fact that I easily can get caught up in my own head/imagination. A co-worker at my first job nick named me "Psst" because he would do that to me all the time. I would often tell him that it's not an accomplishment because I'm easily spook-able.

18. Scary movies don't scare me. I'm too busy watching how the makeup/effects are done, to be scared. Either that or I'm riff-tracking in my head (sometimes out loud). I think slasher flicks are boring and lame, however some sci-fi/horror can be neat.

19. If you get me started I can go on a super long rant about the Twilight series... and I probably won't shut up for over an hour. I still haven't read the final book, but I really want to, because I want to read this train wreck for myself.O: I just don't want to pay the hardcover price for it, so I'm waiting for the (little) paperback to come out... guess it will when the last movie comes out. I have not watched any but the first movie (also horrible, but dead on to the book in my opinion). I originally forced myself to read them just to see how bad they really were with my own eyes, and a RL friend told me "the book is so much better than the movie" and nagged at me about it.

20. My house is pretty much made of plastic, and I'm not sure if I'm used to the static yet.

1.) My maiden name is Cullen.

2.) When I was in early grade school I heard about this awesome club that did things like archery and camping. When I told mom I wanted to join I found out I couldn't because those were the boy scouts. I was a girl scout for a while but we didn't do anything nearly that cool (more on citizenship less on wilderness survival). I know the organization has done some good and we did do some cool things (I loved the museum sleepovers) but to be honest...since then I've perceived girl scouts to be a bit of a joke.

3.) I wanted to be an author and an airplane pilot when I grew up.

4.) On the author front, I have participated, and successfully completed, National Novel Writing Month's challenge 7 times in a row. Not even my wedding and honeymoon have been able to stop me. "Not now, dear. I've got 500 words left." :P

5.) I like to knit and I'm pretty good at it too.

6.) Okay...I'll touch on religion. While I severely lack in the piety department, I am an active, practicing, Catholic. I was born into it. I spent about 5 days as an angry atheist until I realized I was ultimately just throwing a spiritual tantrum over the death of my grandfather (You don't listen to me? Well then YOU DON'T EXIST!"). But then I took some classes on the subject in college and I was pretty blown away by the richness and (gaaaaasp!) intellectual depth. It was amazing how little I actually knew about Catholicism in spite of my family and time spent in religious schools...or rather I knew many of the the "whats" but not the "whys". Now reading up on the theology, philosophy, and history borderlines geekdom for me...and I'm never ever going to have enough time to learn it all.

7.) I've never broken a bone in my body except possibly a small fracture in my thumb but that was never confirmed. To date I also have never had a cavity. I'm 27.

8.) I'm more scared of dying than I am of death. I don't want to go in a blaze of glory. I want to go quietly in my sleep.

9.) My favorite color is blue. My handle comes from taking the word "cyan" and femme-ing it up a bit. I actually don't care for cyan as a color but it sounded better than some of the other stuff I was coming up with.

10.) I'm a pretty big Disney geek. I was a Donald Duck fan long before I was a fan of anything else. I love watching the old cartoons. I'm fascinated by the ones that were later banned. I love learning about the history of the studio and the parks.

Everytime I found out is someone's birthday, I ALWAYS send that person a congratulations message. Why? Cause I like birthdays

I wish I had that kind of resolve. I've yet to finish 6 years in a row now. Mainly due to Youmacon always being the first weekend (ish) and basically eating almost a whole week which I can never seem to find the time to make up...

Re: 10 Random things meme

Postby Ileia » Mon May 02, 2011 11:17 pm

Long post is long. Didn't realize til after I'd written it up. Oh wells....

1. This should be no surprise to anyone, but my favorite color is pink. I'm also quite fond of rainbow. When I go shopping, I'm drawn to anything pink, it immediately catches my eye. ("Adam! I NEEEEEED this pink duct tape!"). It's fairly easy to shop for me, if you just get pink things. Sometimes people are surprised to find out that I like pink because they picture me as being more masculine (or "sporty" as one person attempted to put it delicately). I can be kinda aggressive, but I'm still girly.

2. I went to preschool only one day. On that day, a boy was making fun of my freckles. I told him that I would punch him in the face if he didn't stop making fun of me. He said that I wouldn't because I was a girl. So I did. I knocked out two of his front teeth, then left. Left as in, like, left the preschool and walked home. The preschool called my dad and told him what happened and his response was "She's three years old!" So, just let it be known that if you say I can't do something because I'm a girl, I'm going to do it. With gusto.

3. I have a habit of making snap decisions on important matters. Decisions that should be thought through I sometimes decide in seconds or minutes. When I was 16, I was offered the chance to move to a new state to live with my mother, a woman I'd never met. Did it. Then, one afternoon while I was living there, a friend asked if I wanted to move out. So I did. Met a guy and moved in with him a month later, we ended up spending two years together. After that, Jay offered to pick me up and I could move to Chicago. Yep, did that. More recently, Copycat, who I was dating for only a few months, proposed to me, I went to Las Vegas for six months and sublet my room, then moved back and the apartment we currently live in? We saw it, decided and signed the lease the next morning. And sometimes I don't know what movie I wanna watch.

4. I have excellent memory, most people I spend time with can attest to that. It's not perfect, but I can recall vivid details of situations, clothes people were wearing, what they were eating, what the weather was like, even the most mundane details. It's restricted to the visual, mostly. To study for tests, I'd often make one "cheat sheet" with everything I'd need to know, I'd just STARE at it, then fill out the test accordingly by "seeing" the answers on the sheet in my head. If I didn't do this manner of studying enough, I'd have to zip through the test really fast because the memory would start to fade. This happened in one of my finals in my senior year, I finished in about 10 minutes what was supposed to take an hour. The teacher was disbelieving, so he graded it right there, gave me a perfect score, then the jerk checked my bag and desk because he thought I'd cheated.

5. I'm only on the internet because I wanted to make AMVs. I never really had any interest in computers, but I saw a friend's AMV, wanted to make my own, and got one for the express purpose of making one. When she explained how to procure the anime, I discovered I'd need internet (>_>). For her, it was only a passing phase, she made one and was done with it, she doesn't even have them any more. For me, AMVs are pretty much what my current life is based around. My location, my prospects, friends, roommates and soon-to-be husband can all be attributed to one Final Fantasy fan making a Disturbed AMV.

6. I never just let someone say my name wrong. If you speak to me, and you say it wrong, I'll correct you. I don't care who you are. I sometimes won't even answer someone's question until I've corrected their pronunciation.
Example:
Boss: Hey, Ee-lay-uh, did you do bla-bla-bla?
Me: Eye-lee-uh?
Boss: Eye-lee-uh.
Me: Yes, I did that yesterday.

It seems rude, but I find it more rude when someone doesn't respect another person enough to try to even say their name right. Especially when someone is trying to say it right and just give up and end it with "whatever". Not being able to spare the seconds it takes to get it right sets off something in my head that immediately says "I hate you, too." If you've done this, I probably hate you. And with people that I am forced to deal with who persistantly say it wrong, I will either a) say their name wrong ("Hey there Eeeedward.") or b) stop answering altogether. Now, there are always cases where someone is just scatterbrained and I forgive them and make a joke of it, but I still correct them on it. I can tell the difference between them and someone who just doesn't give a fuck. That being said, I still wouldn't trade my name for the world.

7. I've had many different varieties of pets, I love animals and they usually seem to love me. I once raised a duckling that imprinted on me and followed me around everywhere I went. He wouldn't swim unless I put my feet in the water and he would quack unceasingly when he couldn't find me. I tend to be able to establish a good report with other people's pets. Kristyrat's cat was hiding when they first moved here, but I was able to coax her out in seconds. It's no secret that Koop's dog Mocha loves me best. I currently have a bunny and a rat. I feel like a home without a pet is empty and lonely, and I'll never tire of having one, even when they chew up my headphones.

8. About 10-15 years ago, I used to be extremely introverted and the thought of talking to a stranger would make me sick to my stomach. I didn't have many friends, and I was usually the "quiet one" of the group. I didn't like it, so I FORCED myself to be more outgoing. It's taken awhile, but I consider it to be really successful. Now I try to make it a point to talk to or include the "quiet one" in the group because I can empathize. I don't often feel sorry for people who complain about their introvertedness or about how they are never part of "the group" because I believe you can change it if you really, I mean really, try.

9. Many of you probably already know this, but I was born in Athens, Greece. I have dual citizenship. I always feel a bit of kinship with anyone or anything Greek, even if I can't really base that on anything other than it being where I was born. I wasn't there for very long and I'd love to be able to go back. It always feels like a little part of me that I need to remember.

10. I've lead an incredibly varied life for someone my age and I could write a book filled with just random facts or stories that I have. So much so that I've actually considered that, just writing down everything and seeing where that goes...

Oh what the hell. This is actually pretty fun. XD I'm getting a kick out of getting to know ya'll better.

1) If you had to classify me in politics, I'd more likely be a middle-of-the-road, but I hate the term. Makes me sound indecisive. Mostly because I like to lean more liberal towards civil rights, but more conservative when it comes to business/tax/ect.

2) Religious wise, I'm Presbyterian Christian, but I honestly just claim the title because of something I'll explain later.. My mother is a devout Baptist and my father is a practicing Catholic [my biological father is more or less just "Christian" without any association]. I was so pissed off at the two of them for constantly bickering over what religion I should practice, that I began going to my own church in a local town with my grandparents. Although I really don't follow any Christian traditions, and more or less just try to be a good person in my life, and try to be nice to everyone that I can be nice to. More or less, I do what I feel is right within my own code of morals/ethics, because I feel like I know the difference between right and wrong.

3. While I LOVE video games, I have a seriously hard time FINISHING them. I've got at least 12/14 games on my shelf that have gone uncompleted because I simply lost interest or found another game to play that I enjoyed more. What's sad is that I WANT to finish them, but then I get sad when they're finished because then I won't have anything else left to play. ;____;

4. My dream was to be a teacher, but due to family pressure and threatening of being kicked out of my own home without any sort of money or mode of transportation, I was forced to change my major to pre-medicine [pharmacy]. After I got arthritis, I became unable to attend medical school in my state [they require students health insurance, which at the time I was unable to procure, due to my pre-existing condition], so I was able to change my major to something I actually chose myself [not teaching, but I like where I'm at anyway, so it all ended well].

5. I am a SERIOUSLY bad impulsive shopper and impulsive eater when I'm stressed or depressed.. When I scored my first bad grade on a test in college, I went out and bought an iPod. When I ended up with a C in one of my courses my junior year of college, I went on an eating binge during the winter break and gained like 10 pounds. >_>

6. My mother is a religious nut. In actuality, my mother has acted like this in public before, and condemned many a person to hell. She also teaches small children for a living. >_>

7. I have absolutely no artistic talent. I cannot draw, sing, act or whatever else. I cannot even draw a stick figure right. [If you count AMV's as art, I suppose I'm "average" in that regard. ]

8. The smell of meat cooking makes me physically ill to my stomach, but I still eat it. I was a vegetarian [As in, still ate/drank dairy products] for about a year, but was forced off of it after an intervention from the aforementioned religious nut. I actually plant to return to that lifestyle after I move out. >_>

9. While I have the finances to live on my own, I choose to live at home so I can save money and have a nice home to choose from IMMEDIATELY after graduation [and furnish it if need be] and a few weeks worth of full time work in my firm.

10. Charlie Brown is the best cartoon show and comic PERIOD. Anyone who says other wise can be fed to the kite-eating tree.

I can totally sympathise with that, although I have almost the opposite approach... that was in fact part of the reason I changed away from my Russian name and tend to gently nudge [English-speaking] people away from trying to use it on me when they actually find it out. It drives me nuts when people butcher it, but I'm too shy (or at least non-confrontational) to constantly correct them. So I found it easier to give up my name(s) rather than get into these situations, myself.

But what you're doing is totally right, it's indeed a basic respect thing.
