Should I withdraw from a contest b/c of the tragedy in Japan

I have the listing here on the org set to go live on 4/22, so forgive me for linking over to megaupload here. I just really need some more opinions on what I should do.

The video has been submitted to AnimeBoston's contest in the comedy section, and I always knew that it was funeral humor, but now... I'm just not sure if people will think it's funny at this point in time. There's no tsunami joke or earthquake joke or anything, but it does play with Japanese racial stereotypes a bit (ok, a lot) and also makes an A-bomb analogy. This is Hetalia we're talking about, so poking fun at history is the norm, but... I just don't know if this crosses the line. Do you think that people would be offended, or would it give them a much-needed laugh during this hard time?

If I do withdraw from AB's contest I would probably submit it to another convention at a later date.

Says it's unavailable, Kiarrens. I'd be willing to give it a watch and let you know my opinion, though, when I can get at it.

Hmmmm. OK, that's odd. I'll have to try and fix that when I get home - possibly upload it to my personal site. Everything under creation except reddit and a-m-v.org is blocked here at work. :\

I didn't think there was anything just... HORRIBLE about it. I mean, I doubt the first thing that people would think of was "OMG SHE MAKING FUN OF THE JAPANESE WHEN THEY ARE IN SUCH TURMOIL".

No earthquake jokes and no tsunami disaster...

If you're THAT worried about it, try and edit in some other countries during the lip sync part. I mean, the anvil hits the AXIS powers and not just japan, so it's not like it's just one gigantic slam against Japan. Besides, there are other countries other than JApan that can butcher the engrish language. XD

Then there really isn't a problem. If you aren't intentionally trying to reference it, and you didn't make a joke that coincidentally matches the events, then don't worry about it. There's a slim chance someone gets offended, but someone will get offended by ANYTHING. The average person probably won't even think about it.

Or, to put it another way, if any reference to Japan is off limits now, the entire should be canceled.

BTW: Is it too late to submit to AnimeBoston? I suddenly feel an urge to make a video to Carole King's I Feel The Earth Move.

Thanks for your thoughts. :) Adam extended the deadline to this Friday, I believe.

Pair that with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and you may have a winner on your hands.

Go with what you feel is right. I made a video that used audio sources from several tragedies, including 9/11. The video was released 3 years after 9/11 and people were still pretty sensitive to it. That said, it didn't prevent me from releasing and sending it to cons because I didn't make the video to rile people up about 9/11 or anything else. it wasn't about 9/11 or any of the other tragedies i referenced. Sure I cared about wither or not it offended people but that's their problem for seeing it as being offensive when the real intention was much different.

That was my situation of course which is different from yours. I would imagine the video borderlines on being offensive anyway due to what you described so in all likelihood its possible people will take major offense due to the recent situation. Ultimately it's up to you and wither or not you feel like you can handle the possible backlash.

Thanks for the advice, Pwolf. You should see the writeup I have for video info, heh...

Adam's said that we're going to play this one by ear. If the staff pre-screening doesn't go over well, we'll likely pull the video from AB, but I'll likely submit it to Otakon in that case.
