Yes, but users can vote for a video only once, but can preview (and download) it as many times as they want...
I'm honestly for keeping the stars as they are now. Perhaps changing something about them, but the x stars out of 5 is good, imho.
Well the 5-star scale isn't terrible or anything. Truth be told, I don't care what system we use, since I don't like ratings to begin with. Among other things, I just don't think they are necessary to find out what people like or don't like. There are ways of collecting statistics without forcing user input. For instance, most of the time if I don't rate a video right away, it's going to get a 3/5 in the end-- Indifference. I think that represents the vast majority of videos people don't want to rate, so forcing a star rating every time is a bit redundant when an omission indicates the same thing. If I truly like or dislike a video, it will manifest in other forms:

  • Watched the full video
  • Watched 1/2 the video
  • Watched a certain % of the video... (if it's possible to collect this info)
  • Watched video multiple times
  • Rating Given (can be optional for those that want a way to express their opinion this way)
  • Rating Omitted
  • Added to Favorites
  • Added to Playlist (the only feature I hope we get)
  • Left an Opinion
  • Left a QC or other Comment

They all indicate different things, but together, I think this is enough to find out what people like-- and isn't that the only thing we want to know in the first place? The best part is none of these require compulsory input, so viewers can simply do what they want to do: watch videos.

The first four points are kinda impossible to get every time, since you can download the video and watch it at home - we're not YT |:

I don't think it matters if that information is collected every time or not. Nor do I think it matters if a star rating is collected every time. But it is useful when is does present itself-- and if a video is good, this information will show up one way or another.

Leaving a star rating ought to be optional.

¤ I do NOT think that the star system should disappear or be replaced with a "like/dislike" system. But it would be nice if you had 1-10 stars insted of 1-5 to choose between. Also I don't understand why so many find it so much of a hassle to rate..? I found out that it takes me about 1 sec to rate. A moment of my life I don't think about or misses.
Also.. leaving the rating optional maybe would get the video more views but what good do 1000 views with no rating to you? I rather have 100 views and some ratings to atleast have a hum if this video sucks or w/e to other people.

¤ Maybe some way to comment on journal entries. That's something I think about sometimes.

¤ And you should be able to make more than 2 opinions public if you want to.

¤ Also, please do not turn into youtube or facebook. But if it has to be one of them I'd choose YT.

Well, you do, it's just a multi-step button.

i think the edit function should be for everyone since like every other forum on the world does that. The issue is we're blocking relatively small things that are so standard nowadays. It just makes the site that much more weird for people.

EDIT: i know that some people dont like everyone being able to edit their posts because of accountability issue but honestly, these forums are pretty relaxed that I honestly dont think that matters. I think a general issue with the Org is not catching onto what is common.

In other words the people running this site have no idea what's going on within it's walls, so to speak? Yeah, I concur.

Well, you could always save a copy of the edited post for admins/mods to see, which would be good in case something bad (insult, or whatever) was written, and was later changed. I've always been in for an edit button, and while I don't think it's something really eligible as a perk for donators, I can understand that they want to add it as a benefit.

The problem with "saving a copy" is that they can be photoshopped or faked... a report button that automatically sends a copy of offending message to the mods would be a fair compromise for me to have the return of the edit button for everyone :P

Truthfully I think a lot of this is waiting on the fabled site redesign anyway... so geeze people have some patience :P
