That is the tentative scheduling yes. Usually AMVs is on the first day but we sometimes do it on the second (Saturday in this case). The only thing that may cause it to move is if we have to put Masquerade on Saturday night due to how the Nokia contract works out.

I will keep you all posted I promise.

OK we announced it (unofficially) in the AX forums..so Now it is time to post it here. The "Official" announcement will be going out next week but we wanted to give you, the editors a heads up.

The cash prizing for the AMVs that was alluded to before will break down as follows.

Best of Category (Drama, Action, Pro, Comedy, Fun/OVA) will be $1,500.
The Best of Show will be $2,500.
For those of you doing the math the cash prizing comes to 10K. This is in addition to that crappy Naruto figure you didn't want. ;)

It has taken us many many years, to get this contest the respect it deserves and to be treated as more than the black sheep. Now we are the cool Black Sheep. :)

We owe it all to you guys and your continued support over the years. Thank you!

This year is our 20th Anime Expo. The theme is "Year of the Fan". As part of that, the CEO and the board gave us $10K to use for AMV prizing.

Now, lets get those edit rigs a whirrin. I look forward to seeing your entries.

While I think it's awesome and all... I don't know about this...

It just means everyone is gonna be entering to win now and that just kinda turns me off....makes me feel insignificant knowing that I'll never again be able to get into anime expo and I almost don't want to enter now cuz everyone else will enter.

I also fear that if someone winning over a popular anime and not a well edited one and got the prize money, it would make the rest of us feel like we aren't worth much. It'll be like a big slap in the face, "You can't win cuz you like unpopular anime, so therefore, you suck and here's some money to rub it in your face too."

I'm just kinda surprised the lawyers are cool with this. I'd keep it hush hush from the MPAA though. EDIT - I guess rule 13 actually fixes this problem if you enforce it (you have a lawyer; can't exactly claim ignorance). Looking forward to all the creative commons (or other copyleft) audio that'll be used in this contest. Those small artists need all the exposure they can get.

Quite the ethics dilemma. You guys certainly know how to make things interesting - those are some amazing amounts.

EDIT -
If you want to stop being the black sheep, stop asking your attendees to essentially perjure themselves (thus voiding the contract) by entering the contest. As you have your rules written now, nobody can enter without explicitly gaining rights from all the license holders of the music and anime they use. Knowing how this community works for the time you've been here and the hundreds of threads on the subject, you have no reasonable right to assume anyone has done this without evidence. If you fail to enforce this rule with the same due diligence you enforce the others (like frame rate, resolution, etc.), you are being inherently unfair, biased, and unethical.

Seems it's that time again to wake up from my hibernation and visit the AMV forums... :P

say WHAT? :| how can you copyright a play on official television? i thought several cons have "amv iron chef" :uhoh:

I'd rather we not get sued by Food Network, so we won't be using a name containing both "Iron" and "Chef". A simple solution was to simply use the name Iron Editor since it's already out there and familiar to some people, buuuuut...

I met VicBond007 briefly at Otakon during his own Iron Editor event. The reception was rather lukewarm (though in fairness he was rather busy setting up things), and he rather curtly informed me that he trademarked the name "Iron Editor" and did not want anyone else, including me, to use it. He explained that he hosts the show at multiple conventions and wanted to protect it as his brand or some such. I was surprised, to say the least.

Not an issue though. He has no hold over the format, and there's other names that work just fine if not better. I was settled keeping it simple with something like "AMV Chef", but a couple other names were proposed that we're considering.

Names aside, Brad, Nic, and I are in the process of hammering out details for this year's event (equipment, format changes, footage, etc.) and I'll create a separate thread when there's more info to discuss.

Hmmm...

1500 will get you a nice rig. 2500 will get you an even better rig and some software, especially if you can swing a student discount. Im not gonna sweat it too much, because I know I won't win, doh!

Be kind of hilarious if you win, get your check or whatever and upon leaving the Convention Center get arrested in a huge scene, S.W.A.T.,choppers and news vans, the works. But then again its Los Angeles so all those things will probably be down there anyway.

It'll be missing the ending, act 4 will have no masking, and the entire video won't be color corrected properly, but it's bound to win!

"Who wins at the end?"

"Batman, just like in part 1"
